    Re: An Orchestration Duel

I'd just like it to be known that my lack of participation is strictly because I'm so snowed under you can't imagine- I'm suppose to have a double disk album done in one month with about 32 people playing on it!! In addition to all the other studio projects...

I really wanted to get in on this. Maybe the next one, hopefully.

    So what's the call?

Do I spend the next couple of hours finishing off my mp3, or take a break and try to crack the last licence test in GT4 ?

I appear to have missed the boat on this one. And I was so ready to practice my pitch set theory on that theme of yours!!!!

    Jess,

This is OT, but this sounds like the beginnings of a good assignment stemming from your pitch set posting over in the GPO Academy. I played around with trying to make the theme "12-tone tonal" before giving up and going back to a diatonic setting.

    Just a thought...

What makes Sean's them extra challenging is that it is just so diatonic!

I haven't even attempted to do all the math yet, but I bet it will reveal a really cool pitch set in prime form. I may just do it anyway! Do we have enough votes to extend this a little?

I would vote for extending over the weekend at least, but like I said earlier, I don't want to hold up the group...and as it has been pointed out, we have had four weeks!

I guess it depends on how many submissions Sean has received so far...any word on that?

The theme's been posted for four weeks already?
    How time flies!!!!

Again, I vote this should be a two-month contest. One month is a bit short. For me, at least.

    Still just one entry!

Okay, let's extend this for two weeks to the 16th, does that work? That should give a good amount of time!

Yep, I'm a diatonic guy. That comes from not being able to play an instrument, I guess . . .

Knife fight!!! Forget about your tax returns...everybody pile on!

    Seriously...

    Jess,

If you have time to submit an entry I would be very interested to see how you apply pitch set theory to Sean's theme. Back when I was in school (early 70's) they didn't teach us much beyond making a row and then doing the standard mods (Prime, Retrograde, Inversion, and RI). I've read thru the material at
http://www.jaytomlin.com/music/settheory/help.html and am interested to see how it works.

My own entry will be stupefyingly diatonic!

Funny thing is, when apply the theory to it, I think it actually becomes more diatonic! It has been awhile since I worked with this stuff, so we will see what happens.
