VSL Orchestra plays "The Gladiator Waltz" by Zimmer ( mockup )

i'm a fan of the gladiator soundtrack(the first soundtrack i bought
..) so i wondered if VSL could play the famous gladiator waltz so i did a little mockup :

All the strings ( cellos, basses, violins, violas), brass(tuba, trombones, trumpets,VSL Epic Horns) are played by VSL.

There is only one percussion played by VSL though : the bassdrum, the snares are played by london orchestral percussion and i also used a gecco, i find it to have a sound between the timpani and the bassdrum ..

I also made 3 mix, one which i'll call the reference, and the second with the brass ( especially the trumpets) a little closer than in the first mix.

Finally the last mix is a bit special, it's the reference mix compressed into MP3 64kb/s 22050hz , i don't know exactly but the trumpets sounds thinner than in the first/second mix !

    First mix :

    Second mix :

    http://annecywebtv.free.fr/Gladiator...%20JC-mix2.mp3

    third mix :

    http://annecywebtv.free.fr/Gladiator...destructed.mp3

Personally i'm impressed, i couldn't think VSL could produce such a "powerful" sound, especially for the trumpets

cubase file arrangment : (compressed archive)

The third mix came through as very distorted, so it was hard to make things out. The first two mixes sound good, though. Good job. I like hearing people do things like this because it inspires to not give up since I am just learning Giga and Sonar.

    Hey John ,

I listened to only the first mix , which had some weird pannings ( Too much weight on the right speaker , sound distorts when the heavy part comes in )

It sounds like both the timpani and the snare is on the right side - > Strange . A bit more bass notes in the middle would make it better , since they tend to suck the higher ones towards them .

The mockup sounds really nice if you except the above.

    Well done man !

    John,

a question..how much of this score are you actually playing from your keyboard controller? Can you explain..

I like the brass in the first mix better. They blend more. Anyway, great mockup. Why not go ahead and just do Mars- Bringer of War from The Planets?? You have a good start already

Someone did do a mock-up of Jupiter from Holsts The Planets on the VSL website. And it's mindblowingly amazing. It must have taken that fellow months (or at least weeks) to record that. But it is very impressive. That demo alone almost made me rush out to buy Opus 1 (then I realized I was broke...dang)

I've heard that- it is pretty amazing. One of the best on the site as I recall.

Yup. I would dare say it's the finest sampled orchestra mock-up I've heard so far. Mind you, Thomas Bergersen's Evolutionary Progress featuring the French Oboe library is also amazing. Original music that really breaths. Hope this guy gets a film contract. He can write!

Okay, after being the harshest critic of the VSL library I finally have to say that..... "Jupiter" rocks.

Still don't know if it's worth the time and the price tag but I'm starting to see the charm in VSL.

    Cheers,

    Jose

    Hello,

in fact i used a mix between keyboard and notation software, i used a midi file already done(with keyboard i think) as a base and after i added some parts with sibelius.

About the distortion during the heavy part, i don't know exactly, i'm not very good at mixing ! There are probably 16 horns playing with 6 trumpets plus violins, violas cellos and basses, and the big percussions rolling in the background ( it was funny to program them lol ! ) may be it's because of the EQ i did on the brass : i increased the high frequencies from 3.5 Khz to 20KhZ, i think it's good to hear more the "metallic" sound of the brass.

But i really like the third mix : i distorted it on purpose by compressing it in 64 kb/s 22050 hz , it "smooths" the whole sound and especially the trumpets, but i agree there're too much distortions... how can we do what this compression did without too much distortions ?
