    Talking Debate on the pronouncing the word ...

    "Scherzo" on the composers station. Now that I can enjoy every ones music here at work I've noticed a number of times Charlie and Deirdre debating over how the word "Scherzo" is properly pronounced.
    Let's give them a hand, shall we?
    Here is my input – It is pronounced, Sker-tso like “Scare”- tso. Sorry, I can’t put those hyphens over the “e” and “r” but I think you get the idea .

    Interesting... how were they pronouncing it... "sheer-so" or "shirt-so" ?

    I guess the way you say "sked-ule", or "shed-ule", would influence the way you say Scherzo.

    I just pronounce everything like it looks . . .

    concerto = consert-o
    Chopin = choppin'
    Bach = Batch
    Arpeggio = Arp-peg-gio
    Scherzo = Ssss-cher-zo

    Actually, I checked with the New College Edition The American Heritage Dictionary Of The English Language and The Harvard Dictionary of Musical Terms. Both show the pronunciation as I stated above. The best way I can explain in laymen’s terms is, Sch - as in SK and er - as in “air” and zo as in “so”.
    Yes, I think Charlie was pronouncing "SCHERZO" Like "CHER-SO" and Deirdre was pronouncing somewhat correctly although I don't recall exactly how.
    My mom being of Italian descent would roll the “r” like, Scherrrrrzo. Gave it more of that Italian old-world flavor.

    Of course, it's worth bearing in mind that it's entertainment rather than accuracy that they get paid for. Wait, I'm not paying them anything. Oops...

    I found it very entertaining indeed to listen to them argue over the correct way of pronouncing Scherzo. Great show programming!

    Just because I know how incredibly picky music academia is about pronunciation and proper grammer, here it is:

    http://www.encyclopedia.com/html/s1/scherzo.asp

    A friend of mine applied to teach at a University whose name I will not mention and when the HEAD of the Music Department finally sent him the rejection letter, there were eight grammatical errors in the first paragraph!

    I love the form by the way. Nothing like a good ole' ternary form with a trio in the middle. Huzzah!
