    There's ANOTHER election coming

November, 2006. The Republicans are shaking in their boots with the Tom Delay scandals, with the Terry Schiavo fiasco, with the Social Security backfire and the attempt to hijack the confirmation process by getting rid of filibusters...

Would be nice if we could actually go back to a real separation of powers.

It would be nice if we could go back to having two parties (or, dare I say, even three or more)!

Jim Jarnagin - no not THAT Jim Jarnagin, the other one.

You could make an equally valid argument that the Dems are the ones hijacking the confirmation process. The process is set up so that confirmations are approved or denied by voting. If you refuse to vote, then you are preventing the process from completing.

If Bush's nominees are such horrible people then why don't they just vote against them? Why must they resort to NOT voting? It's silly.

No, it's not silly at all. Without the filibuster, the Dems (or the Republicans in other eras) would simply have to give in to every little wim the Republicans have, thanks to their majority vote. In truth, the Dems have approved many, many of Bush's nominees and only resorted to the filibuster on a select few. Thank God they did.

As you well know, I do believe in majority rule, but I've also made it clear that there has to be checks and balances so that the majority doesn't have carte blanche to do whatever they feel like. Were you paying any attention the last time we spoke about this?
