New live performance from a friend of mine

    Hey all,

I'd just like to take a few moments to rave about a good friend of mine who is a classical composer, and an NS forum member. His name is Steve Kukla, and he's based in the Boston area. He recently completed and recorded a new composition based on events in the life of Mollie Steimer. And I swear I'm not biased when I say this piece rocks. Especially the finale, which is the most emotional movement (it's BEAUTIFUL), and by far my favorite. If you don't have the time right now to listen to all of these, at least catch the finale!

Steve also recently got accepted to have his works performed live at the Aspen Music Festival (http://www.aspenmusicfestival.com).

Without further ado, here are the links. Oh and in case you're wondering why he didn't post this himself: if he posted it himself, he wouldn't have been able to rave about the music like I did. Enjoy!

Performed by the New England Conservatory Orchestra
    Conducted by Maestro Sergio Monterisi

    1st Movement: Ellis Island

2nd Movement: A Montage of Work / 3rd Movement: Anarchist March

4th Movement (Finale): The Freeing of Mollie Steimer

He'd also like to add that the sample libs he used were invaluable during the course of writing these works. (Project SAM for brass & percussion, Opus 1 for everything else)

Great Composition Steve! Do you think you could describe how her life is described by the piece. Im not familiar with Mollie Steimer, Im thinking the finale has to do with her Death maybe? I dunno. But its B E A utiful non-the-less!

Oh and the second movement rocks!

    Hi everyone!
Thanks Sam, for posting this stuff... Unfortunately, my bandwidth capabilities just don't compare to samhulick.com. I appreciate the fact that folks have actually listened to these pieces. They were the result of a half-hour reading session earlier this week.

As for the story of Mollie Steimer, and this piece's relation to her, please, read the notes I included in the parts and score: www.kuklamusic.com/mollienotes.pdf It's a fascinating story, and one which I was very proud to be a part of. In short, the music was inspired by a stage-play for which I was given the script. From the script, I wanted to see if I could evoke the particular emotions that I thought were present, as well as certain moments in the play. (Ellis Island has to do with a steamship coming into Ellis Island, for example). In the notes, I included the parts of the four scenes I chose, as well as my notes as to what I tried to do with them musically.

Regarding mockups, let me say this: whatever talent I may have for writing music, such talent is not at all present for recreating it with samples. At least, not now. That being said, here is the mockup I used when scoring the 2nd movement: www.kuklamusic.com/molliesampled/mollie2+3.mp3

Thanks so much for listening, and if you have any other questions or comments, please feel free to leave them. I was thinking about asking folks if they'd like to have a go at sampling the movements. It might be interesting for me to see how the music would sound if it were well sampled.

    Thanks again,

    Steve

That's incredible. I was going to ask you Steve if you could let me have the score to the Finale to have a go at using sample lib VSL. Then I thought - Naaa - he ain't gonna do that!

Very nicely played piece of music and well done on the mood.
