Topic: Time for a new computer!

Smile Time for a new computer!

I've saved up, and it's almost time to treat myself to that dream computer. I'm going to use it to run Gigastudio 3.0 and GPO. Now here's my question: Should I build one, or buy one?

    What are your experiences?
If I should buy one, where should I get it?
If I should build one, can someone here give me a "building computers for dummies" type of thing or walk me through the process?

Thanks in advance for your help!

hehe - that would be a whole book. It's not something you learn in a few weeks. You build up your hardware knowledge gradually. It'd be better if you have a friend or someone you know who's builded a pc before and would like to help.

I kinda figured I'd get that for an answer!
Well, let me rephrase that question: does anyone want to be my computer builder hardware whiz friend?

Take your current computer completely apart...everything.

Then reassemble it. Install windows. Get it going.

    Then do it again.

After you feel comfy with that then try to build your new one.

I'm currently working off a notebook and I hope to build a tower or something. But I have done that with my old, old tower. It crashed. It was such a good computer. Why did it have to leave us? (tear) That was my 800 mhz, 256 mb RAM, 40 gb HD. Back when everything was in mega. It was solid as rock...never crashed untill just a year and a half ago. Pretty good for win 98.

Re: Time for a new computer!

I don't understand the shroud of mystery.

A Windows machine is a bunch of commodity parts: case with power supply and fans (hopefully installed already), motherboard, processor, memory chips, and drives. They all screw in and plug in. Then run the installer for Windows XP.

Sure you want to choose the right components, but you don't need to fly Herman in to do that. A monkey could put a PC together.

I'd recommend rephrasing your questions to ones that I can't answer:

    What motherboard and processor?
What's a good, quiet case with at least a 350W power supply?
    SATA or ATA drives?

Having said that, there's certainly some value to "specialist" machines if you're really going to be pushing Giga or Kontakt. They test the combinations thoroughly and support the machines so you just think about writing music.

If you're not going to build it yourself, from separately purchased parts that fits your needs, then make sure you buy a package from a company with good support. In my experience, one will need it.

Last year, I spent 4 moths of 5 hours a day studying parts and reading tests and user's expericenses, discussing parts and usage for weeks in countless numbers of forums .. and discussing it with experts and stuff. My goal: Getting rid of system problems and instabilities by putting together the best PC for media use that money could bye at the time. But that effort did not help much . Therefore, my five cents is to suggest you get a good support thing going, meaning you will not have to deal with all the issues on your own.

    Chris,

I'd build it..Get all of your supplies at ZipZoomFly at: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Home.jsp

You will save at least 33% over an OEM like Dell to build it.
