I think you'll do okay. The HD RPM will not hurt GPO since it streams from RAM during playback. It might take it a little longer to load the samples into RAM, but once there they will stream fine.
I had a desktop that was a P3 1 Ghz with 512 MB of RAM and I could get, dunno, about 3 or 4 instances loaded and playing back.
If worst comes to worst, you can always limit the polyphony of any particular instrument (like the timpani, bass drum, etc.) to get you by until you can render the songs.
Of course, if this is for sketching, then it all depends on how much you are willing to bounce to audio.
The minimum specs call for 1.8 Ghz processor and 1 GB RAM. The updates even call for more. However, if you want to run less than a full orchestra you may be okay, but proceed at your own risk.
