    GPO Podcasting is here!

    Hey, folks.

    We now have a GPO Podcast on the Composer Channel site (we're not podcasting the Composer Channel radio show content as some people didn't want their music distributed in this manner).

    This Podcast will contain a wide variety of musical styles from the Garritan demo collection, the recent competition winners, and anything else new that Gary comes up with that he'd like us to broadcast. We're currently providing content in 11 different musical styles.

    What is a Podcast?

    Subscribing to a Podcast is very similar to subscribing to an RSS feed with your news reader. Rather than having to go out to a web site and check for audio downloads, Podcasts that you subscribe to will automatically download new audio content, typically in mp3 format, to your desktop or portable mp3 player.

    You don't have to have an iPod to listen to Podcasts - that's just the name that caught on. For Windows users, audio will download to Windows Media Player, which can then be transferred to your Pocket PC or other portable device. For iPod users, the content will download directly to your iPod.

    How do I listen to a Podcast?

    To subscribe to our Podcast, you'll need to install a Podcast client, which handles the task of automatically downloading audio that you subscribe to into your mp3 player. Like RSS news readers, there are quite a few out there. We've had good luck with the iPodder from www.ipodder.org. They're also a great source of information on Podcasting since they're the folks who created Podcasting.

    Subscribing to the GPO Podcast is free, as are most of the Podcasting software programs currently available.

    So, if you don't have one already, download a Podcasting application. Then, go to www.ShowProgramming.com and click on the orange XML button or GPO Podcast link, copy the URL that your broswer then navigates to into your Podcasting application, and you're all set!

    Enjoy!

    Thanks Chris!

    "Podcasting" has become a very popular form of music delivery. "Podcasting" is making audio files (most commonly in MP3 format) available online in a way that allows you to automatically download the files for listening at your convenience. Although the term "podcast" derives its name from the iPod, it has little to do with the iPod but applies to any software/hardware (like most computers or mp3 players) that permits downloading.

    In recent times this "do-it-yourself style of broadcasting that has become the rage. Think of it as music on demand. You can download whatever programming you want and listen to it whenever and wherever you want. As Chris mentioned, podcasting is simply online audio content that’s delivered via webfeed and you automate the music downloads. New dispatcheswill be waiting for you on your computers for you to listen to at your convenience.

    Chris, I would like to thank you for putting together this innovative project. This is another great way for GPO Artists to get their music heard!

    Re: GPO Podcasting is here!

    When I read articles in the Wall Street Journal talking about Podcasting, I figured it had hit prime time!

    I'll also be making some updates to the online system for our contributing composers on the Composer Channel over the next few weeks that will allow them to specify individual songs that they'd like to include in our Podcasts as well. I think Podcasting is going to take off like Blogging did, and will be an excellent way to gain new visibility for your music!

    Hey Chris:

    There appears to be an error in the link for the Podcast XML:
    Code:
    <a href="/GarritanPodcast.xml"</a>
    <img src="/images/xml.gif" border="0" align="left">
    </a>
    Just FYI.

    Hi, Zach.

    I'm not sure I understand the problem you're having. Could you explain further so I can help?

    The error is in the opening anchor tag:

    Code:
    <a href="/GarritanPodcast.xml"</a>
    ...which should be...

    Re: GPO Podcasting is here!

    Hi, Michele.

    To subscribe to a podcast, you don't download the file (as it's frequently updated). Instead, you paste the link to that file into your podcasting app.

    I'm not a Mac guy, so I don't know how iTunes works. I would think there would be some sort of menu entry to "subscribe to podcast" where you'd be prompted to enter the url.

    Can any of you Mac folks help out on this one?
