The lesson here obviously is to be myself and not try to be anything else.
Congratulations! I'm glad that my comments were relevant. Again, I really liked the transition from the winds back to the main instrumentation. Best moment int he competition!

I believe it is now my responsibilty to set the next challenge.

I will aim to have this posted by 22nd July.

If anyone has any suggestions for refining or improving this challenge, please post your ideas in this thread.
I've been reading Adler's Study of Orchestration. One thing he focusses on is the reduction of orchestral pieces to piano, as well as aranging a piano score as a full orchestration. Being an orchestration duel, it would be cool to present a piano piece to be orchestrated. That would give you the challenge of composition, harmony and counterpoint, and focus the next round firmly on orchestration.

And if they don't like the composition, tough! You get to make the rules.

All the best with the next round!

Congratulations to all, and especially to the winner Richard! And to the two composers who have not yet "fessed up"...it's that time. All the entries were very good and something to be proud of!

Richard - since you're in charge of the next round, I would like to add my agreement with what Jon has said about orchestrating an existing piano piece...that might be a cool variation for the third round. Of course it's your call, since you probably have a good theme lined up already.

Congrats Richard,I voted for number 3 because I liked the rich sonorous texture of it.(The jazzy harmonies did not sway me in any way. )

    Re: The Orchestration Duel Redux

    I am the one responsible for Entry #1 . . .

It was quite a challenging melody, and while I can now think of many ways I could have improved my entry, I think I did alright, and I am happy to see that I got some votes! I also thought entry #3 was a very good orchestration, and quite worthy of victory. I look forward to the new melody that will be made for the next round!

    Hi folks,

I wanted to extend my congratulations to Richard, Sean and the mystery third entrant. You guys did wonderful work with my melody and it was a genuine pleasure seeing the diverse ways in which you chose to attack it. Great work folks, and I can't wait to participate in the next

    Best Regards,
