So time has come for me to buy a new hard drive. I\'m wondering if people here have experiences with the different drives.
Currently I\'m looking at the cheap Western Digital 80gb drive, the Seagate Barracuda IV, and the IBM Deskstar GXP. What should I get?
I have the WD600BB (60G 7200RPM) and I quite like it. It\'s big and fast... just what you want for Giga. I went for the \"OEM bare drive\": no box, no cable, no rails, no screws, no software, no manual. I got an ATA100 installation kit (rails, screws, cable) for cheap at a local retailer and downloaded the manual and installation software off the Western Digital home page. I managed to save a few bucks in the process. Check out jazztechnology.com (no affiliation):
I\'ve had my share of problems with WD harddrives in the past. One of them made these clicks and comepletely froze the system for a split second, which made it unusable for GigaStudio/audio use. However that drive works fine on my new motherboards, apparently it was a compatibility issue with some VIA chipset. I will buy one of the new ones soon - they\'re getting really good reviews and I can\'t get the IBM GXP60 drives working in my GigaStudio machine, so I\'ll have to try something else. I\'d go for a WD or IBM GXP60 if I were you.
