Re: The Orchestration Challenge III Entry Voting

Hi All - I must own up to entry 5 !

Congratulations Linda on being a clear winner.

I'm new to GPO as well, and thought this challenge was a great idea to commit to some ideas. I generally work with more melodic themes so this was quite a challenge. I went more for the rhythm hence the percussion to try and emphasise the off-beat nature. As primarily a pianist I worked out some harmony ideas and recorded that into Overture - then built up the orchestration from that.
I didn't get very adventurous and just used an ABA form so I could put a wind section in the middle before coming back to the theme.

I then played the parts back into Cubase, using individual players to build up the string sections.

The best part was hearing how other people had interpreted the theme - for those that didn't submit an entry get practising ready for Challenge 4, it's a good experience.

Thanks Richard, Jim and Sean for organising this Challenge.

    Regards.

    1) Here's a theme with no harmony (what we've done for the first 3 rounds)
    2) Here's a theme with harmony that must be followed once; orchestrate as you wish
    3) Here's a theme with harmony that must be followed always; orchestrate as you wish
    4) Here's a rhythmic motif and harmony...make your own melody
    5) Here's a public domain piano piece..orchestrate it

Of course, if the restrictions get "too weird" then we might not have many entries...so there's that to think about, too.
1, 4, and 5 sound good to me. Although you could suggest harmony, I'd really hate to see it a restriction that you must use a certain melody with a certain harmony. Although, yes, this does make it kind of a "composition challenge/duel" as well, but it's definitely good practice!

    But that's just my opinion!

Well, it looks like everybody has revealed who they are! Thanks for describing your process of orchestrating it, after working with the melody it gets stuck in your head, it's always interesting to see how other people did it.

    Sean,
I agree with you that 1, 4, or 5 are probably the best way to go...I was just listing possibilities.

Absolutely...this was a great round and I think it's getting better each time! Thanks to Richard for a cool theme that is still going around inside my head...

Of course, we're still open to comments from the GPO community on this round. And when Linda has a new "assignment" ready for us, she can post it on a new thread under "General Discussion" with the title "Orchestration Challenge IV" or similar.

    Thanks to all!
