Earthbound - Crazy tribal beatnick jazz

Here's a crazy piece I just completed using GPO and Battery drums.

    Earthbound - 1.27MB

Just to understand what I'm going for here, since I've never written anything like this at all. This was written to be heard in the scene of a movie that takes place in an non-distinct nightclub. The band is never seen, so the director let me take liberties at what kind of music might be playing. For some crazy reason, I came up with some highly dissonant 50s hipster movie jazz for an ensemble of eight:

    bass flute
    muted trumpet
    muted trombone
    muted tuba
    upright bass
    piano
    xylophone
    drums

I used the new convolution reverb that comes with Sonar 5 to simulate the interior acoustics of a smokey nightclub.

I hope you like it. I'd love any feedback you may have.

Very cool stuff, right up my alley. Great energy, and I like the language. I'd like to hear where this goes. Hey, you only live an hour away, let's start a crazy tribal beatnick jazz band.

Crazy Tribal Beatnick Jazz. Yeah man, I'm going to have to steal this term from you--it's the perfect term to describe the music in my head. Check out my "Sandwich Musings" pieces at www.soundclick.com/schmlud ... "Little Monster" and "Shenanigan" lean a bit in that direction too, but not as much as the stuff I'm writing now... My wind ensemble piece is very tribal--has a similar vibe to your "Earthbound" in some ways--if I ever GPOize it or get a decent performance, I'll send it your way.

Good stuff, I can't wait for my SONAR 5 to come next week.

Thanks, Chris. I had a lot of fun with it. Keeping fingers crossed that the director goes with it.

I listened to a couple of the pieces on your site. Fun stuff! I've always had a soft spot in my heart for songs about food!

    Thanks!

Good news, too... the director loves it! It's going in as is.

    Gotta love when that happens.

Congrats on the director including it. I enjoyed the kooky 50's sound.

Like, groovy, Daddy-o. Or however they used to say that... lol.

Neat piece, Jamie... solid acoustical feel; very intimate; definitely got that smoky nightclub thing down to a tee.

    Nice job!

By the way, I've got a really cool black beret, you know, and I'm not afraid to wear it.
