Re: Cast your Orchestration Challenge 4 vote!

Uh ........ perhaps I'm the only one who missed the "premise" and/or "ground rules" for this. Are these 100% GPO? Undisclosed? All original? Some covers? (I've not yet had time to hear all 7 so I'll get back for a vote later.)

Inquiring minds want to know. (By the way, I think in the true spirit of a "blind" hearing that folks contributing to this thread should not influnce the Polls within 100 yards, ya know? While it's interesting that one person really likes #4 or whatever, I think each voter should be voting without conditioning and/or influence.

The rules that seemed to have formed are listed here :

    http://wizardwalk.com/OrchestrationChallenges/index.htm

I don't think they have to be 100% GPO, but mostly GPO, to keep the playing field fair for all competitors (i.e. we're all working with the same set of samples). Of course the rules are not set in stone and can be further discussed in round 5.

In the last challenge, I gave my opinion on each entry and mentioned which one I ended up voting for. As nobody can see what someone else voted for, I don't see how anyone could feel pressure to vote for a certain entry, unless someone feels scared to have their own opinion, which would be silly in the world of music! I personally enjoy reading other people's opinions, which entry they voted for, and why, even if I don't agree. Of course, nobody is forced to do this.

    Hi Kevin,

In Response to your comments, I would just like to say that this Orchestration Challenge has some loose ground rules, as Sean pointed out, but it is all for our fun and enjoyment.

My first time involved was the last round, and I really enjoyed reading the comments that were sent in, before and after the voting.

The winner of this Challenge 4 will have the opportunity to write a challenge melody for the next Orchestration Challenge. If you have the opportunity to orchestrate it and get involved, you will see what I mean about how much fun it is, and the comments just make it more interesting.

    Thanks for writing in......Linda

    Hi Kevin,....again,

I just realized that you have been around this forum a LOT longer than I have!!

I am definitely new to this....I hope I didn't come off sounding like a know-it-all. ....Just wanted to share my thoughts about the Challenge.

    .....Best Regards, Linda

Re: Cast your Orchestration Challenge 4 vote!

As Sean said, the rules have kind of evolved as the Challenge itself has. All instrumentation should "primarily" be GPO...but I wouldn't be outraged if someone used some percussion from another library...choir "oohs" or a different piano would be right on the line...a full-blown SATB choir singing "Kyrie Eleison" or a passage with prominent string articulations that GPO doesn't have would be far over the line. Just my thoughts...

Kevin does raise a valid point about "blind hearing" and "influencing the polls". I could imagine a situation where some respected and knowledgable member (say someone on the level of Fabio, DPDan, Tom, or Gary) might influence voting by giving either an "unfavorable critique" or "glowing praise" to a specific piece. BUT...since they don't do that, I think it's not really an issue (and unlike some other forums, we never hear stuff like "Number X rules, but Number Y really s*cks!'...so that's a good thing).

As one of the participants, I don't want to give up the chance to hear both favorable and non-favorable comment and critique. We could ask that folks hold their comments until "Fess Up Time" after the voting is over, but we must remember that not everyone logs in here everyday, so if those folks had to wait, then they might make no comment at all.

I would rather hear comment and critique "before its time" than none at all.

    ...just me own $0.02!

BTW - if you ain't voted yet...start making some decisions! ;-)

    Hi All

Some interesting entries! Well done to all who entered and good luck!

File n° 3 is behaving very oddly on my PC. My regular Mp3 player doesn't play it at all and Media Player shows some very odd things in the information bar eg. it shows the duration as zero, odd number of kb/s etc but plays the music. Anyone else getting this? I downloaded it several times.....

    Kind Regards

It seems to download and play fine on my computer. I could try emailing it to you, if you'd like.

It's ok Sean, like I said, Media Player did eventually play the music, although it still did some strange things in the process. Thanks anyway .

    Kind Regards
