Sleeper Cell Theme - Part 2: The MP3

A few days ago, I posted that I got the theme for a Showtime series, Sleeper Cell. It's a series about a cell of Muslim terrorists here in the U.S.

I think Showtime is doing a free preview this week, by the way. Episodes 1-4 all repeat Thursday through Saturday (hint, hint .)

I didn't want to post an mp3 of theme until it actually aired, which episode 2 with the theme did tonight. So without further ado:
    ~dead link~

Bonus points if you can identify the lead instrumental sound.

Double bonus points if you can name where most of the beat comes from.

I'll post a full sounds list on this thread for those interested late Tuesday.

    Thanks guys!

Nobody has any guesses as to the melody instrument sound?

Looks like a distorted kazoo. Or an E-Bow. If it's a kazoo, you're the boss.

    Christian

Edit : mmh... Too much harmonics and fret-like work for a kazoo. Would have been fun...

Sounds like a guitar and e-bow. Might be backwards guitar, but it sounds pretty frontwards to me.

    Most importantly, great music!

This is a wild guess: a theremin type instrument patched through a distortion and a delay unit?

    Really enjoyed the music!

Christian and Stefan have good ears! It is indeed an e-bowed guitar, but as a twist, the guitar is fretless.

For the non-guitarists, an ebow is a hand held vibrating electromagnet that makes the strings vibrate. I play guitar, but that thing takes way more finess than I can manage, so it was played by Alper Cakir.

The opening drone is "Apocolyptic Drone," a patch on Atmosphere, along with low strings and various sound effects (booms, whooshes and chimes.)

The beat is four separate loops from "Hadeeth: Arabic Rhythms" by Big Fish. There's also a Stylus RMX loop "74-Rhinoceros Combo" and some "Tombass" drums from Plugsound PS03 as well as Stylus "Big Boomers" for oomph.

I had a tough time with reverb on the drums. As they are now, they're a bit dryer than I'll normally do, but there's something about the dryness I like. I went back and forth on that one.

Vocals are Patty Mattson, a local session singer doing 4-part (3-part plus a low octave.)

    Thanks for all the responses!
