Orchestral Workshop in Bulgaria May 2006
For those interested I want to point out Ceoil Productions is doing an Orchestral Workshop in Bulgaria. I did this workshop in November 2005, and it's a great oppertunity for composers to have their work performed by a real

Bulgaria: May 2nd – May 11th, 2006
70 piece Professional Symphony Orchestra
Open to both film scoring professionals, concert composers, and students who wish to record symphonic music cues for their showreels or other uses. The purpose of the workshop is to give participants the opportunity of recording with a Symphony Orchestra in a format that allows, for those who wish, changes to be made to their orchestrations, after consultation with workshop faculty. Composers will have the option to consult with workshop tutor Robert Drasnin (Composer and Director of Music for CBS Television (retired), currently teaching at both U.C.L.A.’s Extension Film Scoring Program and Screen Training Ireland’s Film Scoring Program), Valeri Vachev (Principal Conductor of Philharmonica Bulgarica, Sofia), Christo Pavlo (Music Producer), and Derek Gleeson (Composer/Conductor/Producer, and Director of Screen Training Ireland Film Scoring Program in Dublin, Ireland) vis-à-vis any changes or additions to their orchestrations.

Schedule: (subject to adjustments)
May 2nd (Tuesday): arrival in Sofia of participants.
May 3rd (Wednesday): consultation with Bob Drasnin, Valeri Vachev, Christo Pavlo, and Derek Gleeson. Each participant will have the opportunity to discuss any changes in the orchestrations that participant may wish to make prior to the recording sessions.
May 4th – 5th (Thursday/Friday): Revisions to score and part preparation.
May 6th - 7th (Saturday/Sunday): Recording at Studio One, Bulgarian National Radio. Studio equipment includes: SSL mixing console, Genelec monitors, Neumann and B&K mikes, Lexicon reverb, Nuendo-based hard disk recording, Sony & Tascam multi-channel digital back-up recording, professional recording team, Conductor Valeri Vachev, Producers Christo Pavlo and Derek Gleeson.
May. 8th – 10th (Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday): Mixing and editing of music cues, and preparation of multi-channel masters on CD, DVD, or HDD. (The recordings will be a 24-channel recording to Nuendo, with a two channel DAT master, delivered to each participant on CD. For those who wish to remix at a later date, the multi-channel master will be copied for them to CD, DVD or HDD at a small extra charge.) Mixing: four hours of mix and editing time, per hour of recording time included. Additional mix time can be purchased at 50 Euros per hour, however this MUST be booked at least two weeks before workshop commences.
May 11th (Thursday): Departure day
Cost: 1,995 Euros per participant, which includes:

3 flutes (2nd flute doubling alto flute, 3rd flute doubling piccolo), 3 oboes (3rd oboe doubling Cor Anglais), 3 clarinets (3rd clarinet doubling bass clarinet), 3 bassoons, 4 French horns in F, 3 trumpets in B flat (1st trumpet doubling piccolo trumpet), 2 tenor trombones, 1 bass trombone, 1 tuba, 1 timpanist (4 drums), 4 percussion players (snare drum, bass drum, suspended cymbal, crash cymbal, tam-tam, triangle, castanets, wood blocks, temple blocks, sleigh bells, glockenspiel, xylophone, vibraphone), 1 harp, 1 piano, 12 first violins, 10 second violins, 8 violi, 6 celli, 4 contrabass (no C extension).
Consultations with Robert Drasnin, Valeri Vachev, Christo Pavlo, and Derek Gleeson regarding any changes and additions to the orchestrations.
One hour recording session with orchestra per participant. Four hours of mix time per recorded hour. Recommended length of piece per recorded hour, based on a single continuous piece: one hour equals approximately 3-1/2 minutes to 4 minutes maximum. Two hours equals approximately 7-1/2 minutes. Three hours equals approximately 12 minutes.
Studio, conductor, recording team, and technical staff included in cost.
Translator/Assistant who will be available throughout the program vis-à-vis daily needs, as well as arranging sightseeing tours, etc.
Complete buy-out on all use and re-use of the recorded material
Additional hours of recording time can be purchased at a reduced cost.
Accommodations will be arranged at the Rotasar Hotel in Sofia (see website: www.rotasar.com for rates).
Pre-arrival requirements: Two weeks prior to departure, participants will need to submit their scores.
Additional, optional services which can be provided: orchestration and arranging for those participants who wish to avail of these services.
It is highly recommended that each participant brings with them their own laptop computer and portable printer, with their scoring software installed, so that they can realize, prepare and print any changes to their parts prior to the recording session. For those without laptops, it is possible to make arrangements to have access to computers and printers; they will most likely be PCs, not MACs, and participants will need to bring copies of their software.
