    loading old music...

I'm thinking of buying Garritan Personal orchestra and i was wonderin if i could load my old MIDI songs into the kontakt player that comes with the package and edit the new soundfonts for the songs?

(I also replied the same way in the "Tips" section...)

You'll likely need to make some performance changes to the MIDI files first. Typical SoundFonts use MIDI velocity to determine volume, while GPO uses Mod Wheel (CC#1) to contour the volume (and velocity to determine attack strength). There is a tool available to convert old MIDI files to make these changes.

In the end, though, you'll probably want to load the old songs into a MIDI host with VST plugin capabilities (and I believe GPO still comes with one?), and then rework the data by hand for best results.

But the bottom line is your past work will still be available to you.

The old version used to include CubasisVST. You'd better check before purchasing, though: I'm not sure if the licensing agreements have changed over the past year or so.

Yes, hopefully the MIDI has one instrument per channel, so then you load up the GPO instruments (not called soundfonts in the player, though) to match. If you used more than 8 MIDI channels, you'll have to use two instances of the VST (or the Garritan Studio Player standalone app), but that's not much of a problem.

Just checked, and it does have Cubasis VST. i'll definetly be getting this. The kontakt player has fading and volume controls correct? like if i wanted a string ensemble to get louder and louder i could do that?

    Re: loading old music...

Right. Since volume is controlled by the Mod Wheel, you can shape swells and fades the way you want. There are plenty of GPO tutorials on the site (and helpful people here) to get the most of it, should you decide to purchase!

Cool. And don't forget, you could also call or email Gary Garritan himself with any specific additional questions!
