The Concerto Project - Part 2a

A while ago I posted the opening piano solo of my Second Concerto, based on Martha's live performance recorded as a MIDI file and realized with the PMI Bosendorfer. Here now is the first orchestral entrance of the concerto, realized with GPO.

    Concerto No. 2, excerpt 2a

The piano is still the PMI, realized from Martha's performance. The orchestra parts are realized from a MIDI file generated from Finale and edited in Sonar 5. I don't believe it's finished, but I'm letting it go for now because I'm anxious to try out some other ideas.

I'm about to start on another version of the same excerpt using GOS for the strings, and Project SAM for brass and percussion. I've run into some problems importing GOS into Kontakt 2, but I've read some ideas on the GOS side of the forum, and I'll try putting those into practice. After that I'll try it out with some different libraries as well; I'm trying to get a feel for how they all sound, and I'll probably end up using a blend of several.

I think I need to work on getting the piano and orchestra to blend better. Right now they sound like they're in different spaces. Also the balance could be improved. Suggestions welcome, as always.

    Excellent writing in this, Dan!

I'd love to hear this performed live.

I hope you'll get the chance someday. My hope is that this project will lead to future performances. Since the concert recording was totally screwed up, this may be my best option for promoting the concerto, so I want it to be as good as possible.

Hopefully, I'll have the GOS/SAM version ready in a few days.

Excellent writing Dan. One of the advantages of GPO and other samples is that composers have a vehicle for promoting their work.
