PDQ Bach - By PDQ Dan

On chat today DPDan posted a link to a PDQ Bach realization he did over a year ago. It was so enjoyable listening to it that I thought I would share it again.

Dan did a delightful and masterful mockup. I particularly liked the brass slides and blatts.

For those less familiar with P.D.Q. Bach, this name is the pseudonym under which Professor Peter Schickele has written a substantial body of satirical music, recorded on the Vanguard and Telarc labels. The music combines takeoffs on musicological scholarship, the conventions of Baroque and Classical music, and a certain amount of slapstick comedy. Schickele has written a fictional life story for P.D.Q. Bach, in the book "The Definitive Biography of P.D.Q. Bach" (1976; New York: Random House; ISBN 0394734092). According to this biography:

    Enjoy!

    A stunningly original intepretation.

    Bravo!

Few conductors could dare to match such excellence.

I believe the flushing noise in measure 74, however, was somewhat under-mixed.

Great Job, Master Dan. A very uplifting piece with a definite sense of humor.

Somewhere a whole clan of Bach ancestors are whirling away in their graves - whilst applauding the nuevo blat trombone/horn nuances of this piece.

Only a true commonsewer of older music can appreciate the delicacy of this piece in comparison with say --- the seating of one in a chair of fresh Cholla Cactus for a performance of Wagner's complete Ring (Around the Tub) Cycle.

    Bravo - Bravissimo! Less-- Less!

I will never forget my introduction to PDQ Bach. There I was, sitting quietly in my box at the SF Opera House, the one nearest the stage, and a strange person popped into the box, walked up to the rail, grabbed a rope that was spread out on the floor, and leaped overboard, landing on the stage.

Shortly thereafter, my department supervisor, who was also present, presented me with a copy of the book as a birthday present.

(I have a feeling I am repeating myself.)

I agree. Even fooling around, Dan does better work than I ever could.

And gosh-darn, but he looks spiffy in a white wig.
