Topic: Are my speakers dying?

    Are my speakers dying?

I've got Altec Lansing 2.1 speakers, nothing too special... in fact, it's amazing these cheapos are still working after about 4-5 years, and I've been composing using them too Got 'em for $80 but the price a year or so ago was a mere $35.

Anyway, starting today, there's these weird, very faint pops/crackles coming from them. Kinda like the sound on a vinyl record when you've just put the stylus on the record and there's no music yet..but a bit quieter. I shut down the computer & monitor just to make sure.. they still did it on their own. Is this the first sign of speaker death? Is it time to start looking at a new set?

Sounds like amplifier death to me. (They're powered, right?)

Speakers themselves are probably ok, op-amps and transistors will do this. Could also be exposure to moisture.

Yeah they're powered. Actually the noise has stopped.. it's been fine all night and and this morning. But I'm sure it will come back. I think I'm gonna ditch these eventually this year, and grab the Blue Sky MediaDesk 2.1 studio monitors.
