The setup is completely structured, yet the spray of water, while all ultimately leading in one direction, is fantastically unpredictable.
You know, as I think about it, that's an apt description. But then,
as I've said before, I'm usually as surprised as anyone at what comes
off my pen. Jamie, what you say makes sense -- it's as though I
set the ground rules... but the music itself decides directions often
    very unexpected (to me).

I think the reverb has a long lush tail that may not be too natural. I like the sound of it, but my ear keeps telling me this is not a real hall. I only mentioned it because I wondered if it were deliberate. I often purposefully process effects in an unnatural way if it serves the music better. What reverb are you using?
As I commented to Louis above, I agree with you. There's more tail
on that reverb than I wanted; but I was having difficulty getting it
under control without causing collateral damage... lol. One of these
days, I swear, I *will* get it to behave the way I want it to!

    Quiet and thoughtful?

Not me... lol. Most people think I'm a local truck

    certainly not at all quiet.

I've listened to nearly everything David has posted, and I must say that (at least to me) his style is always recognizable (and arresting!). There is so much mediocre music written these days, it is refreshing to come across a composer like David who never ceases to surprise and amaze me with his inventiveness.

On an urelated note, my apologies for my absence from the forum of late - my schedule has been NUTZ for the last few weeks, and I have also been dealing with back spasms (ouch) so I've not had the time to interact with you all or give you any contributions to listen to. I'll be back... I promise!

    Congrats again, David my friend!
Yes, it's true, I *did* torture Jonathan with this piece three or four times
when I was kicking the tires on it, seeing if I was going to buy it.

And I gave Bill DeWitt (valhalx) an earful or two a number of times as
    well.

The fellow annoyed the most, though, was our own Bob De Celle. We
correspond quite a bit (Bob's doing many of the scores for the Rimsky-
Korsakov) on various matters, and for a while there, he was afflicted
with practically daily updates. Quite seriously, I owe Bob De Celle a
debt -- were it not for his encouragement, I think I would have ditched
this piece around the halfway mark.

In any event, Jonathan... many thanks for your kind comments, my
    friend!

Glad to see you back in GarritanLand... the place just wasn't the same
    without you.

Your title is perfectly fitting... you made it so easy to visualize this manifestation of Light. The reverb setting was perfect.

I especially like the distant high octave strings during the beginning.. almost had a sense of screaming in vast emptiness....that was chilling. (cool!)

As always your work explodes with so much urgency.... ideas and imagery fly in all directions... but yet it's all part of the same core structure.

Love the ending! As though all this energy expended it's source and slowly faded away.

    Bravo!!

    You truly inspire me!

Gosh, Jeff, thank you so much for your kind - and enthusiastic - comments!

For the record, I really would have preferred harmonics for the couple of
places where the strings float quietly up near the edge of outer space...

I'm sorry about all that exploding stuff, Jeff -- I hope I didn't get any on
you... lol. Seriously, keeping all of that under some kind of rational
control was a serious headache... and I'm not entirely certain that I
    succeeded at it.

If I could only use one word to define the Sosnowski style it would be ....Clarity.

Here we have passages which are occasionally dense and murky, and yet the feeling of clarity persists. I now realise that what I have been picking up on, is clarity of thought, rather than clarity of texture.

The usual Sosnowski hallmarks are there ;scintillating woodwind writing, fascinating piano work that effortlessly pulls focus from ensemble instrument to fully-fledged soloist. What seems new to me is the extra weight given to the strings.

I love this widening of your string writing. It adds a lot of passion and depth to the mix.(Superb job on the rendering of them bye the way). The trumpet writing is quite breathtaking at times. It seems to teeter on the edge of hysteria, exuberant and ebullient. Dizzie Gillespie compared to your Milesian treatments of the past.I also loved your rather heroic French Horn writing.

You offer many different views of light here. From a veiled unfolding to an adamantine brilliance. This is light that is in love with its shadow, and shines all the brighter because of this.

You see David, I take my role as the official Sosnowski interpreter seriously. .

Many congratulations on a superb achievement.

    regards Joe
    Joaz,

By dingy (yes, we actually say that around here), if you hadn't shown
up soon to explain this fool piece, I was going to fly over there and
roust you out of the sack... lol.

Quite seriously, I thank you once again for such extremely generous and
kind comments... and I really do think you understand what I write far,
    far better than I do.

But the kindest note of all is your reference to the clarity of thought. Joe,
more than anything else, I work my backside off trying to maintain that...
thank you, my friend, for hearing it.

By the way, Joe, we're taking up a collection to help pay the medical bills
for the trumpet player -- sad, aneurysm you know -- I hope you will
    pitch in a few pence...

    Always my best,

    David,

I ran out of adjectives for this one. You seem to have a natural knack of painting panoramic pictures with notes. This music eminates with cogency, diversity and depth.

I listened to this over and over in the headphones and in the mind.

Thanks for sharing your musical Realization

    Gary

    David,

Very nice. In particular, I love the piano part and interaction between piano and orchestra. Congratulations for this major achievement!

    David,

just found 14.8MB of time to take a listen - I wish I could do Joaz' eloquence, but all I have to say after listening is, "THAT'S A BLINDER!!". And if that doesn't translate from cockney, that's one of the best things I've ever heard on the forum (and let's face it, there's some stiff competition), and that's including from you!

    Brilliant!

This is really quite resplendent. Bright and crisp and colorful.

I would love to hear this performed by a real orchestra. This would be wonderful on a CD combined with Kernis' "Symphony in Waves" and Feldman's "Coptic Liight" -- all three pieces would be vastly different, but they all have that shimmering, energized, exuberant quality. (Kernis also has a piece called "Garden of Light," which might be more appropriate, but I've never heard it).

I've been brainstorming a large orchestra work illustrating different aspects and manifestations of light. Maybe now I won't bother!

    chris.
