Look forward to your next offering!
Thanks for the good word, DKO, and for taking time to listen.

Much of this piece was sketched before JABB was introduced,
but I must say the JABB trumpet worked wonderfully for what I
wanted to do in it: that is, the music came first.

I appreciate the kind comment about originality -- yet, I must
note that I do not set out to explore "new directions", really. It's
probably the last thing in my mind when writing.

Perhaps I do my best work by accident... lol.

i'm trying to think of any constructive criticisms to offer - but i have none...only praises...this piece makes me really want to dig in and write something more personal (and, i guess, serious)...

once again, David, tremendous work! i'll continue to listen to this one

ps - thanks for the plug for my Summer Overture about 50 pages back

pps - when will we hear the finished Jupiter?
Wow, back for round two, Josh... I admire your endurance... and
I thank you for taking so much time with this piece.

The score I took a great deal of care with, this time; though there
is still much room (and need) from improvement.

I especially appreciate your noting the "organic" nature of the writing.
Josh, that's something I work very hard to achieve, a natural-feeling
flow... yet I am never sure if I've gotten that -- too close to the piece
while writing -- until I get feedback like yours from listeners.

It's also one of the reasons it takes me forever to write a piece like
this. I'll often spend an entire session (about six hours for me, as a
rule) working on just two or three measures to get them to flow the
    way they need to.

Speaking of taking forever, all I will say about JUPITER just now is...

I will serve no planet until its time.

From Debussy to Stravinsky with a dash of Gershwin (and a big dash at that). I hope to keep practicing the art of composition and hope to someday approach the quality of your works. There is nothing trite in any of your presentations. You are original and can carry a musical thought through its complete cycle of development. I've listened to this over and over again.

My older ears don't pick up the reverb tail that some alluded to. It sounds perfectly fine to me.

Thanks for the great work of art presented in this piece and all your helpful comments to the forum.

    Hats off to you David.

    Rich
Thank you so much for this abundantly kind review, Richard.

Although I can't say I do it intentionally, there are certainly
    many influences and inferences, I think, that are our heritage;
the essences of which many modern writers incorporate into
    their compositional vocabularies.

Except the Gershwin. That was intentional. Although I do
not copy his style, really, I wanted to capture some of that
subtle illumination that, to me, pervades so much of Gershwin's
    music.

That reverb, Rich, I thank you for your note on it; but I think
Jamie (Kowalski) nailed it that there's too much tail on it. Not
glaring, I think, but it could be better managed. Listen where
there's a sudden stop and a moment of silence, and I think it
    will jump out at you.

Thank you again for spending time with this, Rich, and for your
    generous comments!

As other listeners simply put it in one word. . .

    Bravo!

    Thank you, again, for sharing!

I'm glad that you made it by to listen, Ted!

Thank you for your very kind comments in this post, and the
    prior one.

In answer to your question (in the earlier post), this is done
strictly and only with Finale notation, no tweaking of any kind.
The score posted on the site is also dead true to what I used
to render the piece. Tell you the truth, I don't have a MIDI
    sequencer (and wouldn't know what to do with one if I did);
nor do I even own a keyboard or mod-wheel, etc.

I'm pleased you enjoyed reading along with the score while
listening -- I very much enjoy listening that way, myself,
    score in hand.

    Thanks again, Ted.

Yes, I don't get the impression or mean that are you are looking to be different or novel just for the sake of it, rather that the kind of music you try to express takes you automatically to explore new paths. Which is, in my opinion, how it should be!

It has been so very long since I have realized on first listening such a profound talent - both technical and creative. Your piece evokes sheer pleasure at the hearing and deep motivation upon reflection.

ALL: Gary has just recently joined the fray, here. Don't miss
his First Suite For Band -- some of the best concert band
    writing I've heard here.

Thanks for the good word, Gary!

Thanks, DKO. I think when you tackle subjects like this, you're
right, they draw you down new paths... you begin considering
a lot of ideas -- and questions -- that most of us don't spend very
    much time thinking about, usually.

This piece began as I was re-reading the first chapter of Genesis --
the dramatic recounting of the creation of the sun, moon, and
stars -- all elements of light -- "to rule over the day and over the
night, and to divide the light from the darkness".

    The literal taking of that material was a rich subject to begin with;
but I also began to see this as a metaphor for a very central issue
of human existence: the relationship between darkness and
enlightenment, and the complex routes we take, replete with mis-
steps and tangents, through discovery and realization of fundamental
    truths.

Thank you so much, Tom, for this deeply generous comment.

To tell you the truth, I am never quite sure how to respond when
people say such abundantly kind things.

To myself, I'm just an old fellow who lives out in the woods and
writes a little music on subjects I find interesting. I surely don't
have the skills and sophistication that many here do; but I do
work very hard to be an honest craftsman.

That you find the music rewarding is of great satisfaction to me.

    Thank you again, Tom.
