I like this challenge very much and it's also educational to hear what you can do with a simple melody. You all are great artists, and I hope that I'll learn a lot form it.
Thanks a lot,
Johannes

Writing music for the joy of it.
Mitch:
Congratulations on winning. I'll look forward to your theme for the next challenge.
I am the perpetrator of NUmber six the one with the fewest number of votes.
I used a combination of Strings, horn and timpani frrom GPO as well as 4 trumpets amd 4 trombones from J&BB. the second theme was derived from the descending bass line used as a basis for harmonizing the main theme.
The violin theme at the beginning was based on motives from a retrograde statement (partial) of the main theme.
Again, Mitch - congratulations. a very well deserved honor.
David M.
Congrats Mitch~
I shall fess up as being the one responsible for Number Three
I've been experimenting a lot with orchestrating for woodwinds and strings, with the winds being the primary voices. I began with a sort of false entrance of the main theme. I played the beginning of it in the low Clarinet range as it was written, while tremolo strings played in a different key. The Flute then comes in with a response and then lead into a transposition into the main key, which the strings were in initially.
I then started trading off the melody between various instruments, continuing the melody as a countermelody when another instrument picked it up. I also took a bit of liberty with the end to suit my tastes and went into a new sectionAt the climax, the strings drop out and the woodwinds take a recapitulation of the theme with the original ending of the melody for a lighthearted conclusion.
The whole thing was really fun to work on, especially mixing up the form to be a-traditional, what with the development coming first, followed by the large orchestration and then the smaller grouping to conclude. B-C-A!
In any case, mucho congratulations to everyone's amazing variety of choices!

Congrats on the win Mitch.
And sorry yours didn't get a vote PianoDoc, after i voted i saw yours without any and wished i had picked it so it wouldn't be voteless. Afterall it really was very good, the low strings, just the right touch of timpany, the jazz feel, the horns, all of it. You would have had votes if we had more people voting or if we just different moods for sound when we voted. As several have stated they were all great and choosing one was quite dificult.
Good job Mitch, good ideas.
I wrote number 10. I have to say I really liked number 1 and if I was a bit bigger man I would have voted for it in stead of my own. But there was good points about all the entries. Some had clever musical ideas others got really good sounds some folks got good mixes that sounded more real.
Entering these contests point out how much I need to learn before I'm getting anywhere near GPO's capability.
I look forward to the next challenge.
Well done Mitch!!! And congrats to everybody who participated.
These challenges are really very educational and fun to participate. It is wonderful to see how many different ways there are to develop the same theme. BTW, I am guilty of producing entry 5.
I voted for #5 and I really like that beautiful guitar intro, very well done!
I also liked the theme very much and did a small arrangment with JABB instruments (clarinet, piano and bass) which I played and recorded directly into Cubase. Then I added some "live" played drums. Not so much of a real orchestration, more a soft, warm melody with some backing instruments. Entered as #9.
Great job everyone
and congrats to you Mitch!

Congrats Mitch. I thought all the presentations were good. Nice writing guys (er, um gals). I am responsible for #8 - I call it: Raindrops
This is one of the best things going on this board. Nice challenges!
Congrats Mitch!!
Of course the voting for something like this is so subjective and difficult to decide, so really congrats to all participants for such great work, and many thanks for participating!
I guess the forum really hasn't closed the poll yet, because it looks like a couple late votes are still leaking in...![]()
But the official count was: 2, 3, 3, 3, 2, 0, 5, 3, 2, 2.
Awesome work everyone!![]()
