Just a little note of thanks

One or two of you might have noticed that in the past few months my posts have been sparse at best. As I have mentioned before once or twice I have a history of low vision. Well, without going into detail, lately my vision has gone into rapid decline. I have to rely exclusively on voiceover text-to-speech to use the computer. This means no GPO, no DP, and little use of the computer except for email and a few internet sites like this forum that are friendly to this kind of software.

So I don't know how much I'll be able to contribute. These events may spell the need for a dramatic lifestyle change. Things seem to have stabilized now, so it doesn’t look like I'll lose everything. At least for a while I wont be running into or tripping over too many things.

Bummed out is just not bad enough to express how things feel. It's really hard to be as cheery as I wish I could be. But in 2 weeks I have an appointment with one of the best retina specialists in the country. Perhaps he will bring some good news.

I want to thank all of you who have been so kind and gracious over the past couple of years since I have been a part of this wonderful forum. I've made several lasting friends here, and you all don't know how often your music, humor and friendship have brightened my days.

Please don’t bother with a lot of replies. This is by no means a goodbye. I'll be thinking of you and keeping up with everything. We all have to deal with life as it is. Sometimes it's grand and sometimes it sucks. This is just a little sucky part of mine right now.

OK Styxx, tell us a little joke to brighten thins up.

    Bless you all,

    Karl

"Doctor, doctor, will I be able to play the violin after the operation?"
    "Yes, of course..."
    "Great! I never could before!"

Things You Don't Want to Hear During Surgery:

    Oops!
    Has anyone seen my watch?
That was some party last night. I can't remember when I've been that drunk.
Damn! Page 47 of the manual is missing!
Well this book doesn't say that... What edition is your manual?
OK, now take a picture from this angle. This is truly a freak of nature.
Better save that. We'll need it for the autopsy.
Come back with that! Bad Dog!
Wait a minute, if this is his spleen, then what's that?
    Hand me that...uh...that uh.....thingie
If I can just remember how they did this on ER last week.
Hey, has anyone ever survived 500ml of this stuff before?
Damn, there go the lights again...
Ya know, there's big money in kidneys. Hell, the guy's got two of 'em.
Everybody stand back! I lost my contact lens!
Could you stop that thing from beating; it's throwing my concentration off.
    I wish I hadn't forgotten my glasses.
Well folks, this will be an experiment for all of us.
Steril, shcmeril. The floor's clean, right?
What do you mean he wasn't in for a change!
What do you mean, he's not insured?
This patient has already had some kids, am I correct?
Nurse, did this patient sign the organ donation card?
Don't worry. I think it is sharp enough.
What do you mean "You want a divorce"!
I don't know what it is, but hurry up and pack it in ice.
Let's hurry, I don't want to miss "Bay Watch"
That laughing gas stuff is pretty cool. Can I have some more of that?
Hey Charlie, unzip the bag on that one, he's still moving.
Did the doctor know he would look like that afterwards?
Of course I've performed this operation before, Nurse!
    FIRE! FIRE! Everyone get out!

Thanks Styxx, now that's better. See, told yeh I'm not going anywhere. Just have to get used to this robot voice on my computer chattering at me about dumb things like what window I'm in.

Many people will be praying for you... but in the meantime maybe they will be able to replace the robot voice with a realistic female voice... with a Swedish accent.

Karl, I'm facing the same thing, my problem is called macular degeneration. I am 45 years old but have the eyes of a 75 year old (with MD). No cure and I'm learning to adjust and with some luck I may have few years yet before I can't do this stuff anymore.

I take some comfort in the fact that I'll always be able to play live music (I play mostly by ear anyway), so I should still be able to make a living - that'll be a first for a banjo player!

I'll say a wee prayer for you, take care.

Hey, Nature.com just posted an article online this week at nature.com about a new product that's being tested for macular degeneration.

Writing music for the joy of it. (with Windows 7 64bit, Intel i7 processor, 12GB memory, LOTS of disk space, Finale 2014, Garritan GPO, JABB3, COMB, Steinway, World Instruments, & Soundiron Olympus Micro Choir. And if I ever figure out how to use Sonar X2...the sky's the limit)

    Karl,

You have been here from the beginning and one of the people who built this community. With your good heart and gentle spirit you have helped so many including myself.

You have many good friends here and know that we will be here during this difficult time.

Also, there's always someone in a worse situation- look at Tony - he may have to resort to playing banjo for a living (only kidding Tony ).

You are in our thoughts and prayers. Hang in there!

That looks really interesting! My problem isn't age related but maybe there's light at the end of the tunnel (pardon the pun).

Gary, could be worse, I could be a bluegrass banjo player...
