    giga on intel mac?

    Hi.
I know there is a mac version of giga on the way but will giga work NOW
running windows on an intel mac?
I'm thinking of getting a macbook and using it in the studio as an extra giga machine, and live running logic in Mac OSX.
If the answer is yes, I'm assuming the processor will be fast enough to run giga ok without gigapulse. Is that a correct assumption?

    Thanks for any help.

I'm sure that it won't work, unless you are running Windows on the machine - and I don't mean "emulated Windows in OSX".

I think it's best to wait for GVI, if you want Giga on the Mac.

    Jon,
thanks for your usual thoughtful reply.
I thought the intel macs did indeed run windows, rather than an emulation in OSX. And assuming that is so, would Giga work on it? Obviously I'm a bit confused here.

Well given that a PIII 1Ghz or less is fast enough to run Giga without Gigapulse, I can't see it being a problem! As always the question is the amount of polyphony you'll get, but the Macbook should be well up to the task compared to the midrange P4s that run Giga fine.

    Yes, they do.

And assuming that is so, would Giga work on it? Obviously I'm a bit confused here.
    That's a harder question.

There ARE differences in basic architecture between actual PCs running Windows and Intel Macs running Windows. I think one of the main ones has something to do with the fact that Macs don't use a BIOS, but I don't know much more than that.

It's very difficult to say exactly what will and won't work on them yet, because they are so new. There's no technical reason I can see why Giga wouldn't run fine, but then it's always been the case that Giga is picky about hardware setup, even within standard Windows machines. With the non-standard use of the kernel and driver emulation, it may well react quite differently from every other program.

If you were to ask a slightly different question: "Would you be prepared to pay the money for an Intel Mac now, for the express purpose of running Giga 3.0 on it, in confidence that you won't be throwing your money away" . . .

Well, then I'd answer unequivocably "No". I'd want to to see somebody do it successfully first.

If the various Mac dealers that specialise in catering to musicians have any sense, they'll be working hard on this stuff right now. The ability of Macs to run Windows has a HUGE potential to increase their sales in the audio sector, precisely because of people like you that would rather buy a Mac but want to run Windows-only applications. If I were them I'd be testing every Windows audio app under the sun to see what I can get working.

It might be worth your while ringing some Mac dealers and asking them. If you'll commit to a sale on the back of it, one of them might even be willing to try it for you.

This might work: http://onmac.net/ ... but I suggest checking the blog and the site's forum to see if you'll be the first to actually try it.

    Rob,

If you want a new Intel Mac, and already have GS3, you could buy the Mac, figure out how to run Windows on it and try installing GS3, given the ten-day license. If it works, you're golden, and you can buy another GS3 license. If it fails, well, you have a nice new Mac and maybe a spare copy of Windows.

Somebody's got to be the guinea pig!

Personally, I'm figuring 9:1 against. Too many potential driver conflicts that were never designed for or tested against by the Giga dev team.
