    String library for string quartett?

I´m wondering what library you use for string quartett music. I´m currently using the solo strings from Kirk Hunter´s Emerald library but I´m not completely satisfied (which may be mainly due to my mediocre arranging abilities). What about other libraries (VSL solo strings?). Any good user examples of string quartetts?
I have been listening mostly to the large Hollywood type orchestral arrangements, but I wonder how these wonderful intimate quartett sound can be achieved with sample libraries.
    Thanks for your help

VSL would be wonderful and the obvious choice - however any library suffers from mediorce writing abilities. So I dont know if you will end up disapointed.

Hi Marcussen and thanks for your reply. Is the standard library enough or are the extended solo strings necessary (quite some investment for someone who doesn´t make his living from music)? Do you know any good string quartett demos produced with VSL solo strings?
There is still hope for me to improve my arranging abilities but my father always said that you need good tools for your work that´s why I´m asking for opinions about the tools

If standard is enough I dont know.

I have had extended since day one so I'm not too familiar with the differences. But standard should take you quite far I imagine but you will be missing some of the more special and colorful articulations. But definately a good tool for improving.

The VSL Solo Strings are incredible. With the right mixing and ambience they will sing!

Anyone who has used KH´s Emerald library for string quartett composition and can post a demo?
I must admit there is one interesting demo on KH´s website with a string trio but most demos are focused on orchestral work.

in my opinion, the best demo technically from the few available, is the Ravel posted by Steve Kallman on the Geniesoft website at http://geniesoft.biz/forum/viewforum.php?f=27

you are welcome also to listen to my string quartet no. 5 (perhaps best finale or scherzo) which is accessible from there are well -here there are one or two things in the .wma export that don't sound as well as the Overture original but it gives an idea anyway.

Thanks for the links. I´ll listen to them tonight once I´m home. I think that string quartetts are one of the most interesting ways to arrange music as they include everything you need but they are unforgiving if the movements you create are not right. You can´t blur things like you can do with (some) orchestral arrangements. Additionally, they fit very well in acoustic pop music and that´s exactly what I use them for

will be interesting to see what you think. For me the KH, despite a few unevennesses, gives a nice expressive sound with more real life than is apparent from the VSL demos though the full version of the latter (if affordable) will give more options and variety than any anything else on the market that I'm aware of. Remember that KH Ruby will add the Romantic violin, mutes and programming enhancements.

Very impressive demos. I definitely like the sound which is less on the aggressive and harsh but more on the warm side. It is definitely different from the KH solo strings which seem to be a little bit more aggressive and less smooth (which has advantages for modern music but performs worse when it comes to sustained and more romantic melody lines). Thanks again for the links
