    New Xmas Piece

Hi - Still working on my Christmas album. So far I have been arranging pieces, but I want to include at least one original and time willing, maybe two. Anyways, here is the beginning of something, but I don't know what to call it. I am trying to paint a picture of a snowy village on Christmas Eve and at the stroke of midnight, that's when the fun begins.

    Xmas Gnomes
    (working title)

Let me know your thoughts on some titles and/or if the piece just doesn't work. I might split it and use it in two different pieces, but I haven't decided yet.

Thanks for listening and thank you for your opinions!

    Best,
    ~Paula
    Cheers!

Wonderful melodic writing in this, Paula!

Split it? I would say certainly not... though some transitional
working over might be a good idea. The contrast between
the rather introductory "comments" or forethoughts into the
vigorous and extremely well written latter section -- I think
that's first rate... highly fertile ground for development, too.

    Top-flight work on this, Paula!

Thank you, David. You are always so kind and encouraging in your critiques and I really appreciate it. What do you think would be good for the transition? I know it is sparse right now. I was considering adding a little more twinkling, like the bright handbells or more bell tree, but not so that it would be overwhelming. Just a touch of sparkle. What do you think would work?

Thanks so much for your input. I am stretched kind of thin right now so I don't think my hearing is too sharp at the moment. I enjoy your unbiased ear!

    Re: New Xmas Piece

Paula, writing good transitions between disparate materials
is -- at least for me -- one of the more challenging things.

There are no particular rules or techniques, I guess... it
differs with every piece, every writer.

But you know you have it right when the ear is left unaware
it has left one part of the piece and entered another.

Were it me, with this material? I think I might slowly
fragment the end of the first material, and blend it into
inferences of the latter material, gradually matching
tempi. But, of course, that's just one of many, many
    possible ways to do it.

    My best,

    HI Paula,

I think structuraly the piece is good. It does build up in a program type of way. If a real orchestra played this piece it would work well. Part of the problem with programing something is that we try so hard to paste a piece together with strong orchestration and theory structure that we forget that a good orchestra can breath life into a piece with emotion and artistic license.

Keep up the good writing. Every piece we write is one building block more, in place, that leads up to the ultimate satisfaction in our writing carreers.

and if you know whats good for you, LIsten to etLux.

Thank you so much for listening! I really appreciate your kind words and encouragement. And David, you are so right! I was worried about the chime of midnight being covered up, but I think it is going to work effectively meshing this together to give it more cohesiveness. It really sounds like two separate pieces right now.

    You guys are great!

    Thanks!

You're right, Sean. I think that I am trying too hard to paint the picture that it sounds contrived a bit. I am still stuck in the lyric/chorus mode of my songwriter days. I have a long way to go to get back to my composer college days! I so envy you! I think that you are mature beyond your years and you will really be a successful composer. Your help here at the forum is priceless!
