    Little Harmonic Labyrinth - Bach

Here is one of the more curious works for organ by J. S. Bach, "Kleines Harmonisches Labyrinth" (Little Harmonic Labyrinth) BWV 591. It consists of several distinct sections, each with providing a different feel on this journey through about every harmonic transition imaginable.

    I have chosen a number of different GPO organ registrations for the different sections of the work as follows;

    Introitus:
    A. Haupt Mix
    B. Baroque Plenum

    Centrum:
    A. Full Organ

    Exitus:
    A. Flute
    B. Haupt Mix
    C. Baroque Plenum
    D. Baroque Plenum & Reeds

Very nice work Gary. Bach's mastery of harmony has always amazed me and this piece certainly demonstrates that. Nice rendering and interpretation here. Sure a lot of progressions packed in 3:40, lol.

    Bill,

I couldn't agree with you more. This was certainly a "shown them how it is done" piece. Likewise, I believe in his Art Of Fugue the preface reads something like, "To the Glory of the Lord Most High, and the instruction of my neighbor thereby."

It recall the time when we were "extracting" secrets by dissection and "adoration" of every single voice movement and harmonic effect of the master of masters, in school happy (unfortunately far, now) days...

    Fabio,

I agree. It is fun to listen and look at masterful works such as this. Discovering so many surprises along the way. Thanks for listening and your comments.

Fine job on this, Gary; I liked the choice of
    stops.

And thanks for bringing this 'round; you don't
hear this piece often, and I don't think I've
listened to it since playing it a couple of
    decades ago...

In the hearing of it, I am again struck by the
fact parts of it sound almost late nineteenth
century French... lol -- I'd bet that a "blind"
hearing to guess the composer of this would
    stump quite a few listeners.

    Best,

    David,

Thanks for you comments. It is one of the more interesting and unusual of Bach's works. Yes it has the feeling of French or even Italian influence at times.

I have written an arrangement on this for the low brass group at Eastman and await a reading sometime soon. I will share it here sometime if it works.

Here's another Bach piece I was not familiar with, but quite a nice introduction to it! The variety in tonal color provided by the changes in organ registration were quite ear-pleasing. Great work.

    Sean,

I am glad that you enjoyed this not so familiar Bach work. I agree that the registration changes add even more excitement to this great work of endless changes.
