I guess I can start commenting on this a little bit.
Let's have a closer look at the HP prefs:
*
Activate GPO Support popup. It offers 3 choices, Never (=GM), Always, or Auto-Detect (default). Auto-detect means that you don't need to mess around with HP prefs when you switch from a GM-based file to a GPO-based file, for instance; it's all routed automatically.
*
Use Contr. #1 for Continuous Dynamics. This option was already in Finale 2005 but has been improved in several departments (for instance, in the extreme ranges ppp or fff).
*
Optimize Attacks. Was also in Fin2005, and also improved in Fin2006, including: fast staccato string/winds notes, slow pp string notes, sfz, etc.
*
Best Legato Effect Using Controller 64/68. This enables GPO Legato for slurs, trills, alternate tremolos, etc. You might ask why there is CC#68 here? Because in Finale GPO, legato mode is newly enabled like that, and no longer with CC#64. This works around the long-standing conflict with the piano sustain pedal in Kontatk player. However, existing GPO users can still use CC#64 for legato effect.
*
Use Unified Keyswitches. New to Fin 2006, there is a full support for Keyswitches in HP. "Unified Keyswitches" are new KS located at the first "-2" octave, from MIDI note 0 to 11. For instance, strings have exact same KS for all instruments in GPO Finale. Unchecking this option allow compability with GPO 2, though.
*
Support For String, harp and Brass techniques. This enables support for special instrument techniques using KS (or patch changes in GM). This is all automatically handled by HP based on the notation (as always in HP), and including: string tremolo, string pizz, string mutes (GPO full only), brass mutes (GPO full only), harp harmonics and étouffés, timpani and bass drum damped notes. An undocumented, bonus, feature is the fluttertongue for flute and piccolo (I will explain this later some day).
*
1/2 tone Pitch Bend Range. GPO Finale has a pitch bend range of 12 semi-tones, fully taking of HP gliss and bend features. HP bend range can be adjusted for compatibility with GPO 2.
*
Humanize Rolls and Trills. Without getting too much into details, consequences on GPO are: realistic rolls for timpani, bass drum, snare/side drum, wind and string trills and tremolos, using various tricks, controllers, L/R hand alternation, etc.
I might also mention the fact that existing GPO 2 users will now be able to use the standard VST/AU version of GPO within Finale 2006, saving the patch settings along with the file. And loading patches with VST/AU is so much faster than with GPO Studio!
Generally speaking I have designed HP 2006 so that current GPO users may take advantage of all the new features, as far as possible.
Other than GPO stuff, there are really numerous general enhancements in HP in this release. I will list this later in greatest detail on this forum or on Finale's forum, perhaps in the form of a tutorial.
I hope this gives you a good overview on this part of the new toy!
