I work writing documentaries that are normally shown to small audiences without any music track. My company now has a project with the potential of appearing on cable TV, and I've been asked to write a score for it. I'm willing to do this spec, primarily so that I can use it in self-promotion, and partly for the good will it will engender.
However, I want to be sure to retain my copyright, and to be able to collect from a rights organization (BMI) if it is broadcast. Work for hire is not an issue here.
I need to brush up on the status of the law. My copy of The Business of Music is 20-years old. Can someone direct me to a book or web site where I can brush up on rights and licensing.
No, I am not looking for legal advice - I just need to brush up so I can be aware of what I'm getting into.
Thanks in advance,
