This version is much improved:
- the resonance is now handled by the violas, divisi. Notice that just 2 notes suffice. Dividing the violas thins out their sound, and makes it suitable for a background role. Paradoxically, writing the violas in 2 part harmony makes them LESS prominent than a single line would be: Two parts are perceived as harmony, instead of as an expressive melody. Having the violas in the same range as the moving lines also makes
the arpeggios slightly blurred, so that they also sound less melodic.
- the basses here just mark the changes of harmony without sustaining the low notes; the result is less heavy.
This is a good solution, but it could be better. How?
