Daylight Savings Time 2.0: Spring Forward

Tonight's the night to set your clocks forward an hour before you go to bed. Daylight Savings Time has arrived - and soon we'll get to enjoy spring and shake off the winter blues.

Don't forget the set your clocks so you get to chat at the right time.

TIME is such a slippery thinger.

Thanks for the reminder!

Argh, I hate losing an hour.

You know, I read somewhere that time implies mortality!

Here's a mind bender: Without time, there are no forces.

For instance, take a snapshot of a ball in the air. It floats. There is no longer any gravity. Or a snapshot of a dragster off the line. There is no acceleration, no momentum, no forces and no motion. Start time back up, and the forces return.

Or, to look at it another way, time is created by forces and motion.

That's why it's called Space-Time.

But if F=ma, then without time there is no mass. You can't really have the ball to begin with... or the dragster... they would cease to exist completely! A snapshot of them would be impossible.

What's really a mind bender is when someone says "The faster something goes, the slower time goes!" They think they understand relativity. Einstein laughs and cries... and sticks out his tongue.

I'm not getting out of bed an hour earlier. I'll just make appointments an hour later when we do it in the UK in a couple of weeks time.

Okay, I think I got it, now.

By the same logic, the slower something goes,
the faster time goes, then, right?

I'm going to see what happens if I sit really,
really still.

I'll get back to you later with what I find out.

Much, much, much later...
