What are the best all around synth and rhythm based virtual instruments

I am working on a project where I need to create some techno/dance pieces. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. No set spending limit.

go to kvraudio (you will have to add the www and .com)

They have everything you will ever need in the vsti techno synth department.

Check out Wusik, DiscoDSP, Rhino2, Firebird, Vanguard, Z3ta+, Dimension Pro, Rapture and XPhraze.

For drums, Stylus RMX and Guru are two of the best.

Thanks for the suggestions. The demos for Xphaze sound good.

Karmacomposer, any favorites among the ones you mentioned?

I already have atmosphere for pads.

Anyone else have experience with Xphaze?

If you want to create some great techno/dance tracks, then here is the short list:

Stylus RMX (best percussion for dance/trance bar none)
Toxic III (awesome moving - as in arp/trance gate - analog feel)
    Vanguard (another awesome techno/dance synth)
DiscoDSP (spacious amazing sounding synth with arp and trance gate)
    Xphraze (just spectacular)
Wusikstation (workstation for all music - I cannot make music without it)
Mesa+ ADD (great for quick backgrounds - pretty much like Stylus RMX, but for everything BUT drums - even though you can do drums with it)
Jamstix (for fills and extra drums)
GPO or KHSO Emerald (for Orchestral elements - I would advise EWQLSO Gold XP bundle or VSL, but I advised the less expensive ones in case you are on a budget)

You buy these and you are pretty much set!

I bought Xphrase when it 1st came out. It's actually a great VST. It's just a shame that Steinberg has not updated it. There are some Xpansion packs available for it but it took so long for them to come out I had pretty much given up on them. Still there are some really great sounds there but newer synths like Blue, Albino 3, FM8, etc are great as well. Xphrase also seems to be a bit of a CPU hog.

+1 for Toxic III ... others mentioned are really good too, but definately check out Toxic III for dance stuff... distributed by Image-Line... demos at http://maxxclaster.com/toxic.html, ...

also Sytrus from Image-Line... more fat FM...

also Octopus... Maxx Claster created this one too, distributed by linplug, demos at http://www.linplug.com/Instruments/Octopus/octopus.htm.

There's some really good stuff out there, many of which would give you enough canned arpeggiated presets and pads that putting a dance tune together should be a no-brainer...

    Prince,

You are not off the mark. However, some like it and some hate it. I am in the "hate it" category. It is FAR too limiting. The midi sequencer cannot record audio (at least in my version) and is a pain in the behind to use with DAW's (again, this is my opinion - I guarantee you that plenty of you totally disagree with me and perhaps some of you know the program better than me and has better insight - but I got turned off by it almost instantly - and I make a LOT of dance/techno tracks).

Most importantly, it is a closed system and does not allow you to import vst effects or instruments (at least the one I bought does not - version 2.5). I gave up on it after a bit - it simply didn't work the way I was used to working. I don't want a program to alter the way I work and block my creative flow because I cannot find something or have to do a work-around.

However, for many of you, Reason is quite acceptable for making this kind of music.

Still a really good and innovative synth IMO, recommended!
Together with e.g. NI's FM8 you can do wonders in this genre
    Supermicro H8DCE, 2*285 Opterons, 16GB Ram, 3TB WD & Seagate drives, MSI 7600GS & XFX 6600GT, Emu 1820m, Thermaltake 750W PSU, watercooling by Zalman & Innovatek, Windows XP64 SP2, Cubase 4.1
