To Dither Or Not To Dither

    My question,
Should I dither my mastered .wav file from 24bit to a 16bit .wav before converting to mp3 for web posting.

    Hi Ray,

It depends on what tools you are using to do the dithering (pre-converesion) compared to your mp3 conversion utility. The mp3 conversion has to have some dithering code in it to get from 24 bits to 16 bits (otherwise you would lose whatever is on those least significant bits of the 24 bit words.

There are different dithering algorithms and some are better than others. Here is a link to a blind test comparing different algorithms from different vendors: http://www.24-96.net/dither/

The results at the link are very interesting. You can hear the differences quite clearly in some cases.

So I would say try both and see which one sounds the best.

    Cheers,
    Kenny

    Thanks Kenny,
I have good dithering software, my question was solely on before wav to mp3 or during. I suppose however good the 24 to 16 is it will still depend on the conversion to mp3 as to what we hear. Non musicians seem to care little about the quality of reproduction these days anyway. I remember a survey done on radio a couple of years back where in the studio they listened to original and compressed instances of a few tracks. They unanimously picked the mp3's as the better sounding.

    Cheers

    Smile,

Ray, I work with cubase and Wavelab in 32bit modus. There I dither at least when I transfer to 16 bit or to mp3.

Do you mean what is dithering Keith?
If you do I'll let someone else post it. I know, but it'll take a few paragraphs to explain and I'm going to bed.

Wouldn't bother wasting your time dithering mp3s. Its a lossy format anyway and the 1st thing the encoder's going to step on is the dither.
