    Showreel comments please

I have edited some of my tracks and put them together to form a showreel, I would like some feed back on version one.

    Re: Showreel comments please

    Hey Simon,

I really like the way you've organized your showreel-- you've organized the tracks so that moving from one to another is a nice, smooth experience.

When I put together my first "collage" demo, I was lucky enough to get feedback from some really well-known commercial and film composers. All of their comments were the same: my examples were MUCH too long. So my goal when revising was to show my range as a composer as quickly as possible. The revised version kept each segment between 4 and 8 seconds.

I know that sounds crazy, but most people are extremely impatient when they listen to extended demos, with their finger ready on the "off" button. You need to SLAM them with your most edgy, flashy stuff right away, knock them right off their feet! Not only should you choose your most exciting music, find the most exciting phrase and paste it into the demo. If you want to get really elaborate, you can even compose segway music/sound to ease from one track to another.

Once you feel that you've put a listener under your spell with these first few exciting tracks, then you can show them some of your more sensitive work.

    Hope this helps!

(in case you're curious to hear my latest showreel, I'll post it once I get home from work)

    Simon... nice job.

However, putting myself in the shoes of an average shmoe who doesn't know anything about music, you should get to the vocal part IMMEDIATELY. Lame, I know, but like Alex said, you have to grab them by the nuts the moment they push play, or they will just shut it off.

    ::Sigh:: our modern no-attention-span world.

    Hey Simon,

This is my showreel. [LISTEN HERE] Its been awhile since I put my ears on it, and now I realize I need to make another. Let me know what you think!

    [EDIT]

Just listened to v. 2- It's much better! Here is a challenging proposition for you: try putting the same number of pieces/songs into half the time-span! This'll force you to trim off all of the excess stuff so that even the ADD-afflicted will be able to appreciate.

Good luck, I know it's hard to apply the audio scalpel to one's own work.

    Re: Showreel comments please

Hi Alex I see what you mean by keeping each piece very short. What did you use for some of your drums on this if you can remember, they have plenty of power behind them...

I have followed Von Richters idea of opening with the vocal.

    many thanks Alex and Von.

    Please keep the suggestions coming.

    Re: Showreel comments please

Again, I agree with Alex... Making each snippet even shorter might be possible.
