    Cicadas are invading!

    ***Advertisments***
Our regional brood of 17 year cicadas have been emerging for about a week now. They are among the oldest living insects in the world. Every 17 years they emerge to mate and die. The invasion lasts about a month. The adults have no mouth and cannot bite or eat. Their chorus can reach 96 decibels! The last time they emerged in the area people had to shovel them from the walkways.

After they die our yearly batch of dog day cidadas emerge and lasts through the summer. Fortunately they don't get as numerous!

We had (still have) them in Ohio too. I remember their little shells stuck to the trees. Neat creatures.
