OT: has anyone tried to compose using.....

I have been thinking bout this alot in that past couple of weeks. It pops up in my mind repeatedly now and then...

Has anyone tried or succeeded in composing a track using every virtual instrument and sample library they have?

I am giving it a thought to see where it might go in the san of five minutes...

A fairy useless exercise maybe, but also maybe a good test for mixing a coherent mix..

Anyone think I have gone mad?

    Yes!

    Sorry to by blunt!

now to be a bit more analytical and serious. I think that it would be a nice excersize, as you say, indeed, but somehow I don't see the point to... too much. On the contrary, if you told yourself, to write an epic work, only with piano sounds, or a trance work, only with percussion, now THAT would be interesting to tackle

Now my problem, lies to the vast ammount one has in libraries.

    for example I have
EWQL Gold, xp pro, SC, Vapor, Adrenaline, DFH Superior. Already the thing is HUGE! But:
Ivory AND Pianoteq, and freebbie pianos
Upright Bass, Manybass, other basses, drum loops, etc

I'm not sure I could come up with something interesting. Especially on the reason to combine the double bass with some orchestral sounds...

TBH, not too long ago (1 month) I did the exact opposite, because I really fancied it! There is a competition in EW to score for a film. And I decided to use ONLY piano and string sounds, but I finally created a vastly electronic feild with plenty of weird stuff...

such experiments are rather useful I think... (so dissregard my first reply )

You've got to be kidding. I'm afraid I'm a dreadful gear whore - I have about a million more instruments than my meagre abilities warrant. Using them all at once would take Hans Zimmer's setup (which I'm just reaing about in Sound on Sound).

I have to admit I think it is a very odd idea, but it keeps coming back to me.. I will make some notes and see what happens..

Yep so I am officially mad! LOL....

    Thanks for the replies

I think we should make it a collaborative effort of everyone on the forum.

Using every sample library of every person.

    I'll write measure twelve.

I never top out at more than about 5% of the resources I have available and I tend to think I am getting way too busy at that. Use everything all at once! I could get the same effect out on the freeway recording the morning rush hour in surround sound. Only that might be more musical.

I remember many years ago producing this mix with a very neurotic performer. I kept taking stuff out and trying to clean it up and he kept wanting to put stuff back in. The Exec. Producer came in and said, "Well, now I have heard everything."
    "What's that?" someone asked.
    "The kitchen sink," he replied.
Needless to say, a rather good track was destroyed by the ego of the performer. It never was released.

Well I have started and I think it may work out OK.,,, though I would not expect it to be a commercial piece of music...

I also may not have made the project idea clear.

I am not using every sound from every library, just one or two..

so far it has 6 instances of EXS24 and RMX

    3 Atmosphere
    2 Morphology
    3 apple loops world pack
    2 Zero g World pack
2 apple loops rhythm section and orchestra

3 from greg Adam big band brass

The RMX tracks feature Ilio and Spectrasonics sage expanders and bonus content
