    Corelli - Fuga Con Un Soggetto Solo

    One of Arcangelo Corelli's gems is his "Fuga Con Un Soggetto Solo", a fugue on a solo theme in four voices. The work originally scored for two violins, viola and cello, sings as beautifully today as it is then. When you listen you will immediately notice that the theme was "borrowed" by Handel for his famous "Hallelujah Chorus".

    Here the work has been rendered using the wonderful GPO solo strings;
    Violin 1 Gagli Player 1
    Violin 1 Gagli Player 2
    Viola Player 1
    Cello Player 1

    Given it structure I felt it also deserved a treatment in brass. In contrast I used the following GPO brass selections;
    Trumpet 1 Player 1
    Trumpet 2 Player 1
    French Horn 1 Player 1
    Bass Trombone (JABB library)

    And if this wasn't enough, my friends of the Washington Sax Quartet (www.saxq.com) asked me to transcribe it for them. The JABB saxophones can be heard as follows;
    Soprano Sax 1
    Alto Sax 1
    Tenor Sax 2
    Baritone Sax 1

    Gary,

    This is what the docter ordered! Having just returned from the funeral for my dear sister and back again on the road on business your music has calmed me down. You are truly gifted and I thank you for the peace that your music has given on this lonely evening.

    Beautiful music.

    I think I liked the brass version the best.

    Yes, those first nine notes do sound familiar.

    I was recently thinking about you. I'm happy to hear from you.

    Hey Gary,
    Wonderful variations and rendering. Very expressive and well captured. Thank you for sharing this one. How long did all this take you?

    Phil,

    Thanks for your comments. I have been very busy the past few months and not been able to post anything. I like the brass version very much as well, inherently brilliant, especially since it was written for the string quartet originally. And the GPO brass gave it everything it deserved.

    I listened to the strings and I thought they sounded just great. I am so used to hearing bach fugues, that It was wonderful to hear someone elses approach. Very nice. I plan to come back and listen to the other versions that you posted.

    Gary - I've spent my available time LIStening, and now I'm running out the door, but Had to come on here to say at least two words, if you'll allow me such a brief reply:

    Beautiful - Sublime - !

    Thank you!

    Hi Michael,

    Thanks so much for your kind remarks. It was such a pleaure to do this relatively small work of Corelli's. It took only a hour or so to play it into Finale and then select the playback voicing. The two versions that followed were relatively easy variants; transposition key changes, select new instruments and all done. The GPO makes it so easy.

    I will be posting more in the near future.

    Jay,

    It is certainly a nice change from the Bach style. A very clean and crisp honest little 4 part fugue. Perhaps one of Corelli's finest works. And versatile enough to voice different ways.
