    Word of the Week: ALACRITY

KE Peace suggested our word for the week:

    ALACRITY

    Alacrity is defined as:

    1. cheerful readiness, promptness, or willingness:
    2.liveliness; briskness.

I thought this word exemplified a trait often seen among the members of this forum.

There is a great deal of music in the Listening Room done with alacrity.

Thanks Karen for this week's word.

And feel free to volunteer some of your favorite words for an upcoming Word of the Week.

The wife has just volunteered to go and get a pizza while I catch up with the forums here. She has acted with alacrity in this matter and I shall tell her so.

I once met a girl who was pretty,
And I made for her one special ditty.
    It sang to her heart,
    "Let the party now start!"
I gained a lass and alacrity!

It was indeed Ron, - but Philippa thought I had completely lost it when I praised her for acting so alacritacously!

Perhaps it is a contraction of the French "a la crity", meaning "of the crity."

    Alternatively,

"A" as a prefix often means "without" (as in "apolitical"), so alacrity must mean "without lacrity". From context, we therefore deduce that "lacrity" must mean without liveliness or enthusiasm, as in "He dragged himself to work Monday morning with lacrity." Having stayed up too late too many nights this week, I feel a bit lacritudinous myself this afternoon

    Enjoy,

    Grant

As I just said on the Challenge #14 thread, there are 2 days left until the deadline - people who haven't arranged an entry yet can still get one in if they start now and work with - ALACRITY!
