Re: It's Time for Garritan Orchestration Challenge #15

Does anyone think the Challenges should take a fall break? It often seems these next few months coming up are the busiest times of the year with Halloween, then Thanksgiving, then of course Christmas, and all the projects people want to finish, like the Halloween contest and the Christmas album. I know there's always something in the way for at least someone who would like to participate in the challenges, but the upcoming season always seems to give people the most to worry about it... what do you think? Should this round be delayed to hopefully gain more participants or carry on as usual giving those who can participate at least a better chance of winning?

Thanks, Randy! I find driving, high-energy themes to be tremendously exciting.

And that brings me to a serious note: While I believe my theme is original and despite my best due-diligence search efforts, there can be no guarantees. Someone mentioned that the opening part of my proposed theme reminded them of the “CBS Late Night Movie” theme, composed by the dynamic composer, Morton Stevens. Are there similarities? Yes. Are there differences? Yes. Is there a conflict? Who knows? You can listen to that theme here. http://mythemes.tv/composers/stevensm.htm

Personally, I was trying to stay away from Alexander Courage's horn opening to Star Trek! You can listen to this theme here:
    http://mythemes.tv/series/startrek.htm

Interestingly, both themes were created around 1966! Hey, perhaps one served as an influence for the other.

Anyway, after consultation with Gary and Sean, here are two things you will want to know: 1.) In the context of the Challenge, we are covered by “fair use” provisions, so there’s no need to worry about any potential conflict. 2.) However, since I know that many of you may want to use your piece outside of the scope of the Challenge, you'll want to proceed with the same caution you would as if you started entirely from scratch.

I encourage you to check out the highly relevant thread, Where have I heard that before which deals with this very same topic!

I would be in favor of this, or just having a much longer deadline, well after the 0ct 31 (i think) deadline of Christmas submissions. But it looks like no one is answering your question, so maybe you could post a thread just for this question.

The definition of impatience: Arrangement done, waiting eagerly for my hardware upgrades and my copy of GPO so I can render it. This will be my very first GPO rendering. I'm so excited!

I think that I am with you........a hugh ol stack of marshells, hooked up via tube screamer (at FULL Vol) using only power chords should get everyone's attention on this......

    GPO Sibelius Edition (now Liberated!)
    GPO Personal Orchestra

    Hi Gary,

You have every reason to be excited! My Challenge #14 entry was my very first full orchestral rendering using GPO. There were moments which worked out extremely well and I was ecstatic to be able to realize a particular passage faithfully. Other sections definitely needed more work -- alas, there never seems to be enough time to approach perfection.

You're going to blown away with your potential once your GPO arrives and you get the installation shaken down! When I received GPO and JABB back in December, I spent a lot of time loading up midi files of familiar works so that I could audition the instruments and understand each instrument's characteristics. You'll find that some instruments speak naturally while others need quite a bit of hand-holding. For me, it's an ongoing process as I continually try to improve my GPO performance rendering skills. As you've probably already discovered, the Garritan Forums and resources (Tutorials, Wiki, etc.) represent one of best ways to learn from those who have mastered the skills you seek to cultivate.

If you have the passion to work through practice sessions with the GPO instruments -- and I'm sensing that you do -- I'm quite certain your musical throughput and expression will jump light-years ahead.

Enjoy the process and I look forward to hearing your work!
