    Help with Brass in GPO

I don't know if this is the forum for this, but still -
I'm having truoble getting the Hollywood massive brass sound (using trumpets, trombones, tubas...). I tried everything - from layering solo instruments, adding reverb, adding overlays and nothing works!

I'm working on this midi : http://www.planetnana.co.il/pinagoras/brass.mid (just something simple I did for experimenting).... Is it a problem in the orchestration\notation itself or is it something else, which is connected to GPO?
Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this message... please let me know if it should be written in another forum.

    Thank you!

    Someone? please?
I know there is a solution, and I heard the sound I want in the demoes in the site, but I can't find the solution...

Re: Help with Brass in GPO

There's a tutorial on the Garritan Site that explains a little about how to use brass, but I, too, would like to see anybody's input here on how they use/layer/program their brass patches (GPO or JABB or CoMB) for specific uses (dark section sound, killer big band trumpets, massive orchestral brass - all sections). I think this is the one of the weakest areas of information on the boards here and the brass patches seem to be the toughest (for me) to get satisfaction out of. All help appreciated!
In theory there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice there is.

I don't think that there is one library that really does it for brass. I usually layer a couple libraries together. I've had great luck using Project SAM's Solo Sessions brass with along with GPO. The drawback of this library is that you have to have Kontakt 2.

    Jim,

Thanks. I will check out Project Sam's stuff. I guess it is similar with percussion. All of the GPO percussion (CoMB too) are fantastic, but I bought VDL 2.5 for a wider range of choices and it makes a BIG difference.

Re: Help with Brass in GPO

    Two things that might help:

    1) I believe it's not very well known but the samples that are marked with "AG" (aggressive) have a separate MIDI control for timbre brightness. That plus some meticulous tweaking of mod control in the overlays should get your Hollywood up and running.

    2) Don't be afraid to experiment: maybe a tuba overlay works for trombone reinforcement or vice-versa? Or stick some discreet tutti organ behind the brass?

I don't have any samples that are marked with AG...

Look for instruments ending in AG, like Tenor Tbone Solo 1 AG. They are surely there unless your GPO player version is ancient (3 years old or so)

Well, I guess mine is really ancient X:
Is there a way to update it in orcer to get those AG sounds? because I think that this is what I'm looking for...

Edit: I think I found what I was loking for... I was trying only samples from the Dry library... but it seems that the Wet sound bigger
I'll try it and post my reply

No, it isn't the dry\wet thing...

Re: Help with Brass in GPO

Well, I found out what causes this problem. The mod wheel.
Although I wrote in Sibelius mod wheel commands (~c1,127) as an expression text, GPO just can't read them \ Sibelius doesn't exports them in the Midi.
    What should I do?
(By the way, I'm using Sibelius to write the notes and Sonar to play the midi with the GPO instruments)
