    Most welcome, David.

I'm a proponent myself of going to see how the other guy did it if I
like the results he got... lol.

And my Granny used to say: "Everything's grist for the mill."

Not that I know what she meant by that...

Sorry I missed this one, David. Very interesting. I would love to know where the tonal sequence was derived from. Hmm, I am wondering if they came from the ingredients.

    All my best,

    Thanks for listening, my friend.

The motivic elements are just impressions; no technical relationship
to the ingredients. I thought about perhaps some mathematical
derivation, but couldn't come up with any way to find, say, the
square root of basil or the fourth power of onions, etc... lol.

The nuts and bolts of the piece, though, use a handful of little
harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic motifs to hold the suite together.
Disassembling it is intentionally fairly easy and obvious.

    All my best,

Oh no! Mama knows best, you know, Roberto; so
she must instruct me, now, in the error of my ways.
Less oil, more basil. Got it!

    I. Olive Oil
    II. Basil
    III. Garlic
    IV. Onions
    V. Tomatoes

    To Listen:

    The Recipe:

Place three tablespoons of virgin olive oil in a small sauce pot and heat
gently on very low heat. Add a quarter cup of basil, and let it soak in
the oil for five minutes as the oil warms.

Add a quarter cup of diced garlic, and turn up the heat a little, until the
    oil barely begins to bubble.

Then add one-half cup of onions and sauté gently for about five minutes
or until the onions just begin to brown.

Add two pounds of (canned or fresh) crushed tomatoes. Bring to a gentle
boil; then reduce the heat to a very low simmer for about an hour, stirring
    frequently.

Remove from heat and allow the sauce to rest for a bit; then it's ready to
serve over the pasta of your choice.

It takes 4 minutes to make such a delicious and intriquate sauce...
And when David adds Basil to it, things really get serious...
The hypnotizing rythm feels even more sophisticated than jazz!
What a fresh, brief and straight forward piece!

David!!!This is, as usually for you, amazing, both musically... and conceptually!

You've been able to render, in each part, the character of that specific ingredient... but in a way that is NOT predictable, by the way, and this is just great!

So, the olive oil is there, standing still... but I tell you, it seems to me to see a peaceful landscape full of olive trees as well.

Basil. By the way, this is a person name as well.
And this part is so vivid, so alive... that it seem referred to a strange character, wandering with little jumps (?!?) and a strange light in its eyes, in a smokey, victorian London... (me and my wild fantasy... xD)

Garlic. Am I wrong... or I'm listening to... its smell diffusing all around?!
Well, those little, low trombone parts seem to say that we are the vampires scared by that smell! xD

Onions. Sounds like our tears can't stay in their place and they're falling down, despite our effort to not cry them! ^_^

Tomatoes. It's the final part of the recipe. I imagine the whole sauce bubbling and getting ready to be served... and, after all, tomatoes keep the sun in themselves... and, is it, that final crescendo, the musical transposition of pouring the sauce on the pasta?

I'll have to listen to it again: but I wouldn't be surprised to recognize, in the ending, a sum of the themes used in the five parts...

A beautiful piece, with an use of the instruments from which I can learn one million things!

    Thank you for sharing!
Have a great everything... chef David! ;-)
