    Spooky Scary Contest Entry

Well, here is my contribution to the 4th Annual Spooky Creepy Halloween Music Contest.

I ask myself what would be the scariest thing to me and as it turns out it was the thought of loosing my mind. Diana Ross once played a character that suffered from Schizophrenia. I have never been able to forget this performance. I've always found monster movies laughable so I allowed my mind to imagine the various images and sounds that could creep into the mind of someone experiencing Schizophrenia.

I have titled this piece, "Schizophrenic Plunge."

As you listen try to picture/imagine the mind plunging from sanity to insanity. Each new sound is represents a new and terrifying horrific thought or image in the mind of the suffer. Try to imagine the small thread of sanity breaking as the mind decends into the abyss as the threads snap one by one. The last measures are the sound of the heart beats, which are the last things the suffer hears and then the cymbal crashes which is sanity exploding.

Good idea, Samantha--To post your Halloween entry here in The Listening Room.

I got a good chilling scare hearing your piece earlier today---brrrrrrrr!

We should direct people to the General Discussion board where the annual Halloween music contest thread has quite a few juicy, spooky pieces contributed to it! New and old Forum members alike have been doing a great job of scaring up some good spooky times over there.

Thanks for scaring me all over again!

I must say, because I love this ride

It's very Haunted Mansion-esque. I'm just waiting for you to go into that theme and the ghoste start singing... "Grim grinning ghosts, come out to terroriiiiiize."

Very neat, very creepy. Nice use of harpsichord in the decending modal passages. I like it overall. Bring us a Christmas tune. Make it original. I am trying to stear away from something too classic. It's not working. I keep inserting Jingle Bells like the Elmo doll where every song he sings is to the tune of Jingle Bells.

Those pictures you posted were scary enough, and then I played your spooky song. I think I have lost my mind. Oh well, I doesnt' take much to do that to me. Anyway, I enjoyed your scary little piece.

    Hi Samantha,

I think this is absolutely terrific.

You have encapsulated the descent into psychic entropy with great insight and skill. This is so evocative, and rather than being scary, it reaks of fear.

A tremendous work indeed. I particularly liked all the percussion you used, and the way you used it.

I can't imagine how this must have felt to pen, particularly given some of your own experiences, but I think those experiences have enabled you to see things that most people aren't capable of seeing, and so there is an emotional depth to this work that transcends the superficial.

    A highly visceral experience, this.

    Congratulations on a great job!

And thank you for sharing it.

    Dead creepy Samanatha!

Subject matter aside, you've achieved some fantastic effects and colours here using the full resources of the orchestra. Is that a few notes on the organ I hear just before the end? This would be great to hear performed live!

I just let my mother listen to this piece and her very first response at the end was a HUMPH! sound. I as her what did Humph mean and she said, "Yes it is really scary sounding. I reminded her of the night I finished it and ran down stairs to tell her I had just scared myself.

Thank all of you for your encouranging comments. I happy to scare you. When I was penning this piece I was watching television, especially America's Funniest Videos.
