Ah. I see your problem. You should have gotten an Apple II and run this little gem of a music editor written by some genius programmer in 1979. Plus, the flip side of the cassette tape had a bunch of ready-to-use music files. What a bonus!
Anybody remember Passport Designs (Half Moon Bay, CA) Polywriter or Mastertracks Pro?
Well, I lived in Pacifica, went to Passport designs a couple of times. I tried Mastertracks Pro till Bill Morrow steered me toward Cakewalk. For a while, they also published Score, which was a very good notation program, but it was not user friendly. Bill got me started with Mastertracks Pro. I got him started on electonic music with the Commodore 64.
