    Carol Of The Birds

I see Gary Mosse has already posted a version of this carol, so I hope he won't mind if I post one of my own. This has been submitted for the next Christmas CD.

El Cant dels Ocells (Carol Of The Birds)
    for ten solo strings
Traditional Catalan carol, arranged by Daniel Powers

This uses both the Stradivarius Violin and Gofriller Cello, in semi-soloistic capacities, along with all eight solo strings from GPO.

Originally this was about a minute longer, as I had included four verses. But it turned out to be too long for the CD, so I did a cut version, leaving out the third verse. I had planned to post the long version here, but after listening to both of them, I decided that the short version (still just over 4 minutes!) was actually better. So here it is.

Here's an English version of the lyrics:

    Upon this holy night,
    When God's star appears,
And floods the earth with brightness,
    Birds' voices rise in song,
    And, warbling all night long,
    Express their glad heats' lightness.
    Birds' boices rise in song,
    And, warbling all night long,
    Express their glad heart's lightness.

    The Nightingale is first
To bring his son of cheer,
And tell us of his gladness:
    "Jesus, our Lord, is born
To free us from all sin,
    And banish ev'ry sadness!
    Jesus, our Lord, is born
To free us from all sin,
    And banish ev'ry sadness!"

    The answ'ring Sparrow cries:
"God comes to earth this day
    Amid the angels flying."
    Trilling in sweetest tones,
The Finch his Lord now owns:
    "To Him be all thanksgiving."
    Trilling in sweetest tones,
The Finch his Lord now owns:
    "To Him be all thanksgiving."

    The Partridge adds his note:
    "To Bethlehem I'll fly,
Where in the stall He'l lying.
    There, near the manger blest,
    I'll build myself a nest,
    And sing my love undying.
    There, near the manger blest,
    I'll build myself a nest,
    And sing my love undying."

    Hey Dan,
Absolutely beautiful rendering and arrangement! You have put so much precision and emotion in the recording. A great job and a pleasure to listen to.

Hi there, Dan - Right off I want to say it's sure nice to see you offering up some music for us here in The Listening Room.

What a gorgeous piece you've put together. It sounds beautiful, melancholy as it is.

The GPO soloists make things quiver a bit more constantly than we'd love to hear, but the Garritan Violin and Cello which are featured in this easily take the main focus, and they're being played so appropriately, so emotionally, befitting the song.

Really extremely nice, thanks for letting us hear.

Wow, Dan, the sensitivity and nuance in the rendering in this is
superb; and what an arrangement... just gorgeous.

With much applause (but quietly, not to break the spell...),

    Hi Dan,
A Great arrangement of this song. It's aways interesting to see what interpretation is placed on songs. I wrote my piece without listening to others ideas. On a search online, I hard a Spanish version a bit faster in Flamenco
    Guitar with castenets, etc.
I think yours sounds more in style with Barber.
