Debussy - Danse - CMB Sax Quartet

The lovely "Danse" was composed by Debussy as a piano solo. Here I have transcribed it as a concert performance piece for my friends in the Washington Saxophone Quartet (www.wsaxq.com).

Here I have set the work for a quartet consisting of soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones using Finale 2006 and the Concert and Marching Band library.

Still another piece, Gary, that would never have come
to my mind as a suitable candidate for transcription to
    sax quartet, but...

What a wonderful fit -- sounds like it was just made
    for the ensemble!

    Loved it!

    David,

I couldn't agree with you more. I wrote the arrangement at their request and it is a perfect fit. The tricky part to it is all the off beat harmony notes. I think that the CMB sax ensemble performs it very nice for our purposes too.

    Just lovely!!!

I never would of even thought of this piece as a sax quartet. But then until you started putting up some of these sax pieces, I never would have considered using saxophones in a classical setting as you have done.

I would love to see the score on this one. Any chance of that?

You seem to have CMB down pat!!!

Thanks for sharing and if you get a recording of the live preformance, please share that with us as well.

    Well done

Boy, that was some pretty saxy music Gary.

It wasn't too long ago I think I heard this played in concert on the piano.

This brings a whole different feel to it but the basic work remains the same.

An interesting period in music for sure and well done.

Thanks for your kind comments Ron. Yes the saxophone is a surprise candidate to many as a classical performing instrument. It is largely ignored in the orchestral world. And in the hand of the right musician it can produce incredibly beautiful sounds.

If I get a live recording that I can share publically I will certainly post it here.

    Phil,

I agree. Some of my favorite music are transcriptions that bring a whole new vision to well know works. I am glad that you enjoyed it.

Very cool gary. I just got CMB last week and I am looking forward to fooling around with it. The piece is very effective as a saxaphone ensemble.

This sounds great, Gary - as did your other surprise Sax arrangements.

--I'm sure glad I'm not a purist concerning "experiments" like this. I can imagine that some Debussy devotees could get ruffled feathers over a concept like this - But I say music is music and most any piece can be interpreted a thousand different ways or more, - some ways of course will be more successful than others. I think this concept you have going is Very successful. Thanks for it!

This is a great transcription. I’m with everyone else – this would not be my first choice to transcribe for sax quartet, but it works amazingly well.
