Is'nt there any way to make the string sections in GPO sound smaller so to say... You know, sutible for your average chamber concerto.

You would need to build up the string section from solo instruments. The full string sections are recorded with a modern full size string section (14-1st Violins, 12-2nd Violins, 10-Violas, 8-Cellos, 6-DoubleBasses if I remember correctly).
