    Trio (revised)

This is re-worked version of a trio I posted a few years back. Originally written for Flute, Harp and Cello, I have reworked it with a Viola taking the part of the Cello. This seems to be a much more common chamber combination - Flute, Harp, and Viola - than those with Cello. I also had a chance to run the harp by a harpist, and was able to make the part more playable.

In advance, thanks for taking time to listen.

(no, it's not a movie - it should pop up as an audio file)

    Thumbs up Re: Trio (revised)

Ron, that is very relaxing and peaceful, i enjoyed listening very much.

I would have thought that with cello would be more common, but of course i don't know much about chamber emsembles and combinations. Lovely work you did with viola here, so good switch.

Very moving, reflective writing in this, Ron; with highly
able development and beautifully melodic material.

I remember this piece from a few years back (in the
cello version) -- and it still retains, for me, that sense
of a certain mental landscape one recognizes, yet cannot
    elucidate in words...

    Perhaps you could also post a link to the earlier version;
a comparison would be most interesting!

    All my best,

    P.S.:

I still think a marimba (rather than harp) version
    might make an intriguing experiment.

Very introspective piece you have here. I love the cello, but this works well with the Viola. The viola has such an unique sound so in a trio, it fits very well.

Do you have a venue for this up there in Baltimore?

    Well done

Hi Ron. Very enjoyable piece. I’m surprised that viola as part of a trio with harp and flute is more usual than cello. I would think people would want to hear the occasional deeper pitches and richer timbre of the cello. I did sample a little of your cello version (about half from the beginning) and in some ways I think I prefer it. Not to detract from the viola version – I really liked it too.

    David,

Thanks for listening. Yes, I would have thought that the cello would be more common - but if you check ensembles, you'll find (as I did) that the flute, harp viola combination is much more common. Go figure...

    Glad you liked it.

Still trying to get me to bite on that marimba idea, eh? I did play around with it - but found that the piece would need to be different. It may be the right combination, but the harp part would need to become something else - almost another piece. Something to think about...

Glad that the piece itself still finds a sympathetic ear. If youreally want to hear the original, it is on the music site in my signature. I didn't put it in the original post - it's a lot to ask for people to listen to two versions; it's a large enough commitment as it is....

Thanks for listening again. Much appreciated, as always.

    Ron,

Glad that the introspective character comes through.

A venue for this - not as of yet. The original version with cello was given to a trio; that was two years ago, so I hold little hope that they are interested (I can take a hint...). With this being a more standard ensemble, I may have better luck shopping it around.

For what it's worth - knowing you have had your Sib 5 issues - this was all done in Sib 5.

Thanks for stopping by, and taking the time to respond.

    Trent,

Yes, I think I may like the cello better; but given the lack of that kind of ensemble (really have to think a bit more practically before I start writing...), I thought adjusting it to a more common ensemble might make sense. There are certain passages I like better with the viola. I think it depends on whether or not it is playing a bass-like role.

Thanks for listening, and for checking the other version - above the call of duty!

    Re: Trio (revised)

It was a love based soul searching musical experience.

We'll, thats about as close as I can come to expressing my thought about this piece.

    I did enjoy it.
