Minor Alterations: Christmas Through The Looking Glass (CMB)

Okay, here it is. This Christmas "medley" will be premiered by the Dallas Wind Symphony tomorrow night.

If you heard my arrangement of "Pat-a-Pan" on last year's Garritan Christmas album then you'll recognize some pieces of this. I've taken all your favorite Christmas tunes (15 in all, I think) and transposed them into minor keys (hence the title). This obviously frames them in a darker mood, which I find both fascinating and comical. When I described the arrangement to our musical director I used the phrase "Danny Elfman meets Allan Sherman." It's definitely something different, and when it comes to yearly Christmas concerts, different is good!

Of course I couldn't stop merely at the transposition - I threw in some novel accompaniments and a few snippets from other recognizable tunes, with little rhyme or reason other than they seemed like a good idea at the time. I hope you enjoy it.

    Great suff David

If the DWS plays this half as well as you rendered it, the audience is in for a treat.

    Well done

    David,

Another winner here. I am sure that the DWS will have a crowd pleasure with this one. Sounds a little like transcribing Christmas music for use in Fiddler on the Roof. Ouy! But seriously, if that is possible, this is really great writing and production.

Many congratulations on the forthcoming performance, David!

    This is superbly done -- rendering, writing, the whole line-up;
impressively strong work, throughout... great shine-and-polish
job on this, I must say. Bravo!

Any chance you'll be able to record the live performance for us?

    All my best,

Oh yesss, this is simply wonderful, David. Thoroughly entertaining variations on the familiar tunes, and superbly realized/recorded/rendered.

What a concert this is going to make!

Thanks for spreading some Christmas--um,--cheer?---here with us.

    David:
What a delightfull, amusing and ingenius arrangement. I am completely Xmas green with envy. I've always held that a minor key holds more possibilities for harmonic fun, twists and turns and you've certainly proven that.
I'm here in Bellingham, WA., working with Phil Kelly, who wrote for the Dallas Symphony. Are you two aquainted?

    Waiting for more---

Thumbs up Re: Minor Alterations: Christmas Through The Looking Glass (CMB)

    David,

I hate it that i was unable to attend this, even more so after hearing this and that there are more that received these minor alterations.

Very good work and very nicely rendered, impressive!

I have been taking care of an elderly parent and can't get out as much as i used to, but when i can, i have DWS first on my list.

How fun. Tim Burton would be proud, I'm sure. Nice to hear these tunes in their minor form for fun.
