    Insanity my best friend

    Insanity, my best friend

    Many think I’m insane
‘cause I find my own path
    Partly roads less traveled
    Finding a few laughs
    Embracing all that’s crazy
I seek refuge with the odd
    Serving me my master
    Not some made up god

    Reality does not exist
    The nothing rules us all
    Time the endless wonder
Throws us up against the wall
The blood that flows in my veins
    Is borrowed from the dirt
    Ashes dust and back again
    It keeps me most alert

    Insanity my best friend
    Will not leave me alone
So I am never lonely and
    I always feel at home
    Self medication is my game
I play it all the time
A little bit to soothe the soul
Topped with a glass of wine

    Am I all right
    Are you okay
    It’s all inside my mind
    I decide my feelings
So will I be mean or kind
    I never know what happens
‘Til the past is in my brain
The future thoughts that might exist
    Decide if I’m insane

If I act like all of you
I guess I’d fit right in
But deep inside my other self
    I know I just can’t win
I’ll be out in the open
    Where all will simply see
There is some type of monster
Living out his life in me

    Insane perhaps or just unique
Of course you do not care
    In straitjackets and padded cells
With these I make a pair
So toss me in the looney bin
    And throw away the key
Away from all the normal ones
Who wish no part of me

The poem I wrote years ago, the music last week.

    Here is the MP3

I did this by hitting record in Sibelius and playing the piano part and then added the clarinet by hand. For those who wonder what kind of score Sibelius does when doing this, here is the score:

Not very pretty. In fact it is down right ugly.

    Both instruments are GPO.

    Comments are encouraged.

P.S. I used to be crazy. I'm doing much better now. (John Astin in some TV show)

The music is fascinating!! I will listen to it at least twice more tonight. The clarinet & piano complement each other very well, neither stealing the show. It had my total attention from start to finish.

Poetry is not of great interest to me, so I will not comment on the poem except that the general thrust of it was to my liking.

Thumbs up Re: Insanity my best friend

    Ron,

Both are outstanding, the music and the poetry!! I think it kinda has a scary message, that it's ok to entertain insanity, but still good stuff, very good!

Amazing piano and woodwinds, there are passages here that just blow me away! Is it all clarinet or is some of it flute?

Is there a score for this?

Don't worry, you're not crazy just really weird or veird as a psych teacher from Norway use to pronounce it.

Well, somebody has to be a little crazy so you might as well have fun with it.

    Eccentric works well also.

But you know, I lived with someone who was eccentric and then they went crazy so be careful.

The music sounded very free. Maybe there was someone with a net chasing it but never able to quite catch it.

The first 3 notes played by the clarinet sound very familiar; like a "fingerprint". I know I have heard those intervals in your other works here and there.

    Well, I'm impressed!
For something resembling a fragmented mind rhythmically there is plenty of lush melodic lucidity to keep ones attention.

    Awesome!

    Richard and David

I posted a score. I have not gone thru it and cleaned it up. The notes jumping all over the place is the way Sibelius does up a score when I play piano in real time and let it make the score. I don't understand the thinking behind it, but I know it takes hours to clean it all up, and right now I just don't have the time.

All of the small tempo changes are just to try to get a human feel out of a computer. Same with all of the hairpins.

    David

It is all Clarinet and piano.

Maybe there was someone with a net chasing it but never able to quite catch it.

    What a great line!!

Last semester I had a Math teacher from Poland. I could understand about every 3rd word he said and read none of his equations on the chalk board.
    Tough Class.

    Thanks Guys!!

When I do free style like this, I am never sure how it will be accepted.

You guys have made my night!!!

My fingerprints are all over this one. You would recognize a lot in the piano that is sort of rushed over. A guy told me once the danger of improv is that they can all end up sounding alike.

I heard a Piano and Clarinet piece by Prokofiev once, and have been wanting to do one ever since. This is nowhere near as good as his I know, but I think it is in the same style. I heard the suite of his on the radio and can't find a copy of it anywhere. I can't even find proof he composed one.

This one was a ton of fun to do as well. I told you I do some of my best composing when I am supposed to be studying. Well finals aren't over yet, so who knows.

    Thanks again

    Ron

Looking forward to your next one!!!

I can open it and download it, so I don't know wht the problem is. Try again and if it doesn't work, send me an e-mail and I will send it that way.
