    Tchaikovsky - Serenade For Strings - Waltzer for CMB Winds

    Recently I heard the Tchaikovsky "Serenade For Strings" second movement "Waltzer" the local NPR station and just had to put it up in GPO. Along the way I thought that it would be equally lovely in a wind orchestra setting. It is challanging but playable. Here it is produced in Finale 2008 using the CMB library scores as a wind ensemble;

    Flute Group 1 & 2
    Oboe Solo 1 & 2
    Eb Clarinet Solo 1
    Bb Groups 1, 2 & 3
    Bb Bass Clarinet Solo 1
    Bassoon Solo 1
    Alto Sax Group Solo 1 & 2
    Tenor Sax Group Solo 1
    Baritone Sax Group Solo 1
    French Horn Group 1 & 2

    For those of you that are not familiar with the original work, here it is for string orchestra using Finale 2008 and GPO section strings.

    I think the wind version works well but the string version wins this one.

    Tchaikovsky is probably my favorite composer.

    I enjoyed both of them.

    Nice to hear from you again Gary,

    A very nice piece but i would have to disagree to 'Fastlane' because i think the Wind ensemble was better to listen too.

    Kind Regards,

    The wind arrangement of this is gorgeous, Gary;
    you're really getting superb miles out of the CoMB
    library.

    Thoroughly enjoyed this -- an expert, if somewhat
    challenging in places, adaptation, once again!

    My best,

    SO nice---I get to sit back and let Gary Bric entertain again.

    The wind version of this was completely and absolutely captivating to me.

    The best yet? Maybe!

    Thanks much, Gary

    Phil,

    I agree that each one has its strengths. I really love to turn new music for the wind literature.

    But I am glad that you enjoyed both.

    Dan,

    I am feeling a little partial to the wind orchestra version as well. I love to write for large ensemble, and such a joyous work. Thanks for your comments.

    Thanks. And the horns are the only brass in the work. Very important supporting role!!

    Thanks David for your kind comments. In deed I am getting to use the CMB more and more. I love writing for wind orchestra and what better piece to put out there than the works of the master Tchaikovsky. I may put the other movements into the same form, at least the first movement anyhow.
